Subject: Can I use an auto amp and sub at home??? IP: Logged
Message: OK, Ok, this may sound stupid, but I have a 400 watt pioneer and a 12 inch sub that I got for cheap. I was wondering if I could hook it up to run off of my home stereo.
The back of my stereo has a RCA Sub out. So I hooked the RCA cable from the back of the stereo to the left input of the amp.
I hooked the sub up to the left speaker outs.
I had a AC to DC converter in my room that had an out of 12V DC. I cut the wires and ran the positive lead to both the positive AND the remote wire screws. I ran the negative to the negative screw.
I figured this would work fine, but when I turned it on, it barely played. The lows were barely audible. What was the problem? Also, everytime it would (try) hit a hard low, something in the amp would click and shut it down. Is there something I did wrong? Was the small 16 gauge power wires to small?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm jusst out of ideas.

Message: How big is the 12V power supply? The Pioneer could draw up to 33 amps if it's rated at 400W RMS. Think your problem is that the 12V power supply can't deliver enough current to the amp.
Try hooking up the amp to a car battery and see if this corrects the problem, all though the car battery will die in an hour or so from the amp draining it.

Message: I'm not sure about your amp's health right now. I wanted to do the same thing a year or so ago. What I found was the a power supply capable of pushing 12V at 30-40amps was extremely expensive, IF you could even find one. More so, then buying a new home amp.
What I did find was a place that sold home sub amps for a reasonable price, $150, and used that with the car sub. It works fine.
Try looking at www.partsexpress.com for the amp if you're interested.
