Subject: Reg Cab Guys.. Here! IP: Logged
Message: Personally i know having a reg cab dak and having hard hitting subs is hard. But here's the best way to do it guys.
1.Forget about 12" woofers, 10" subs hit harder, 12" subs just (have the ability to) hit deeper.
2.Box airspace is key to hitting deep and hard.
3.Don't be afraid of giving your sub more power than the box recommends. If a sub doesn't have enough power to fully extend and retract it will distort and damage the voice coil.
One of the biggest problem we face is box size and depth. I have discovered a great solution. Imagine a Type 1 10" angled truck box. Keep all the specs the same except make the box 50" wide. The box will flow behind the back of the seats. The (one)10" sub, 5.5" depth, will go behind one of the seats, and on the other side of the box, side that would touch the wall, should be a rectangular slot port (about 2" x 10").
The is only one obstacle with this setup. The armrest may hit the top of the box in the middle, and u may have to unbolt the seats and move them forward to install the box behind them. Bolt the seats back into their original place. (my experience)
98 R/C Dak Sport
Custom R/C Box
Pioneer 4400 Head Unit
Orion 150.2 Amp (Clean 600 watts)
10" Rockford Fosgate HE
Hits Harder than my friends 2 Planet Audio 12" and 400 watt amp.
Good Luck Guys, Sorry it was so long but this is the formula for a hardhitting regular cab dakota.

this is an "old wives tale."

sure it is. There are too many variables between speakers- even different speakers of the same size- and enclosures to make any sweeping generalization about speaker sizes. The driving force behind a speaker's "sound" is the enclosure, not the speaker's diameter. A 10" in an undersized enclosure can and will be boomy and sloppy as hell.

Message: youre not the first to think of making the box longer. mine is 48 inches wide. and i took the armrest out and built a new one that is part of the box. and the port comes out on the front of the arm rest. i pull off 2 ft^3 with that using 3/4 inch mdf and using a kicker L5 12. the port is 2x9 and i forgot how long it is. but it is tuned to 37 hz

Message: If I remember right 12's hit because of the Hz range they are able to drop down too. You know like 30-50Hz range, deep bass. Where as 10's are not able to reach low like that they hit in the higher frequency range. I'm not into too much bass anymore but I was thinking of building a box with six 6" or five 8" subs. They require very little cubic feet of air space and I can build the box for my SC so that it won't interfer with the center arm rest or the movement of the seats. And it should still provide a nice punchy bass sound. Anyone tried something like that?

Message: I dont' see how thats possible (tiger) I know JL's 12's take up more cubic feet of air space then then are availible. Are you using a box that is designed to be long in width instead of length so it doesn't push up against the seats?

There's nothing inherent in a 12" that would make it play lower than a 10". If a given 12" woofer plays lower than a given 10", it because it was designed to play lower, not just because it's a 12". Cone mass, suspension stiffness, and motor characteristics are what drives how low a speaker will play, not its diameter.

Message: I think that is basically what I said just in fewer words. You interpretted my statement as meaning just because the speaker is a 12 its able to go to the lower Hz range. Of course its all dependent on what you stated above. I would lean more too Suspension Stiffness and type of coil winding as well as magnet polarization. Although I may just be blowing smoke up your pipes. But I agree with you on your statement.
