Subject: Component installation help IP: Logged
Message: I'm hoping someone can help me.
I'm installing components in the front of a
2002 Dakota tomorrow night. The truck
already has a sub and an amp under the club
cab seat and an Alpine deck. The old
speakers are factory speakers (not infinity).
The new speakers are Boston Acoustic FS60.
Quick specs:
Two-way car component system
* 6½" copolymer cone woofer
* ¾" soft dome tweeter
* Flush/Angle- and surface-mount tweeter
mounting kit
* System-specific crossovers
I'm hoping to replace the factory speakers, put
the tweeters on the triangular plastic area
adjacent to the rear view mirrors, then put the
crossovers next to the amp under the club cab
seat.
This is my first time doing this w/o help and
doing this on a Dodge. Does anyone have any
instructions, tips and/or helpful websites you
could give me?

I have the pictures of my '02 QC component install. It should prepare you for what your going to find once the door panel is off. I put the crossover inside the door to avoid running two sets of wires thru the door jams which is a major pain. The tweeter was easy... in fact the whole install is pretty straight forward, there is enough room to work with and the door comes off without too much struggle.

Message: There is a way to make running the wires less painful. There is a unused rubber plug in the door jam below where the factory wires connect. Use this on the jam side. On the door side, pull the big plug out of the door and you can see from the back that there are other cavities. Just run you wires through there. I just took a thin bladed knife and cut a slit that I ran the speaker wire through. This doesn't look as clean and may not be quite as weather tight, but it works. Just make sure you put some loom over the speaker wire that is between the door and the jam.

Message: To get the speaker wire through the factory door conduit, I just took a long thick wire tie and fished it through the rubber conduit. It's a pain since there are a bunch of other wires in the conduit, but it's not that bad. Probably took 5 minutes to do both sides.

Message: Thanks so much for all of your help. The
speakers went in smoothly. Great advice.
(JMII, fantastic website!! very impressive and
VERY helpful.)
In case anyone reads this message board for
help on their own Boston Acoustic speakers . .
. The tweeters required a 1 1/2" hole saw with
a little bit of sanding. I opted to not create a
new mounting ring, but to put new screw
holes in the factory mounting ring. I screwed
them in from the back and used bolts to
secure them to the speaker. The speakers sat
flush very nicely.
