Subject: Fiberglass CC Sub Box pics IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, here's the pics of the MDF/fiberglass sub boxes that I made for my 00 CC DAK. They are .7 cu ft and have RF 10" XLC subs in them. The boxes tuck up under the side panels and are against the back wall to maximixe the available space. I designed the boxes with reliefs for the subs like the TF's, and with plenty of space between them to allow for the jack, oil, CD changer and other things to be stowed between the boxes.

Message: Exelent job there man!
I would be carfull to make sure the the subs you put in the box have enough room to breath. I know those rockfords do so you are fine if you are going to keep those. Love the cd changer.
Question, does it ever skip? Also HOW THE HELL DID YOU DO THE DAM|\| FIBER GLASS? I have been DYING to learn. I want to make my own center console for a posible new hifonics XI series amp (the girlfriend got the 2 RF powers). I don't mind shelling out cash for things I can't make (Cd player, screens, subs, amps), but it KILLS me that I can't make my own enclosures.
If you could give me an idea on where to start to learn some of this stuff it would be MOST apreciated.
Thanks again in advanced.
Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Message: Ben, I have the cd changer bolted to a peice of 1/2" 9 ply birch which is screwed to the truck, the changer never skips because the mount is realy solid.
Don't get too envious of my fiberglass skills. This was my first project and everything you see is MDF, only the bottom of the box is glassed. I picked up some pointers from a friend, found some good sites on the web and learned the hard way by diving in head first. It's not that hard once you learn a few things. I posted some tips under a post from "Slim" a couple of days ago.

..just ordered the TF. Lack of storage space is bothering me.
Did consider building my own, in particular i thought of mounting subs in the side panels.
Just did not want to hack my truck up that severely.

The shiny paint threw me. Most just carpet it.
WELL YOUR JUST A BIG PHONEY!!!11!!ONE.
lol j/k. Still think it is a great job. I started my first custom center console today. But the sun came out so I detailed the dak. We had a lot of snow earlier this week so it is good to get the crap off. Now I look as good as if I rolled off the showroom floor.
Thanks for the reply. I still thinks it looks great.
Always Thankfull,

Message: Islander, I didn't want to get the TF for the same reason, loosing the under seat storage space. These were cheaper, $50 for supplies, but they took some time to design and build.
Ben, I wondered if anyone was going to think they were all glass, Gotcha. I painted them since it would have been a pain to carpet the complex angles of the box. I like to look of the gloss black better too, just a pain in the azz to keep clean. Just sealed up the MDF and shot some gloss black over it.

Message: Hey I Was wondering did you do the fiberglassing in the truck or did you make a mold and do it out side?
Thanks

Message: The box frame (1/2" MDF sides) was placed in the foil lined truck cavity and one layer of glass mat was applied to make the mold. After an hour the resin hardened up enough to pull it out of the truck. The other 6-7 layers of glass were applied out of the truck. The top peices were secured after all the glassing was completed.

Message: If you make one box all the way across for the 12's, you will be able to get 1.0 cuft out of eack side easliy. These boxes are 0.7 cuft each. The rear seats are in the stock locations, adjusted all the way up. The front of the rear seats sit about 1" higher also, not problem since the kid's seat still fits back there OK.

| RE: Fiberglass CC Sub Box pics IP: Logged
Message: Fiberglass is 2 parts, glass and resin, so the glass (mat or cloth) is glued to the MDF with resin. The only thing that needs to be done is scuffing the MDF with some 50 or 80 grit sand paper to break the glossy surface. The resin realy soaks into the MDF and gives a good bond.
On the boxes, I glued the first layer up onto the MDF about 2", next layer about 3", next 4", next 5" until the glass was near the top of the box sides.
The only trick is NOT to use a lot of resin. Resin is weak, the only thing that gives resin strenght is the glass. You only want enough resin to saturate through the cloth and stick it down to the previous layer, you don't want the resin running down off the cloth or pooling up in the flat areas. For these two boxes I would mix a 4-5 ounce batch of resin to apply a layer of glass.
Try a small project first to get the hang of glassing, but you can tell when there is enough resin by the color change of the glass. Too little resin and the glass appears white, you will see the difference as the glass kind of turns transparent when enough resin is applied.

Message: Robert, take out your tool tray, or what ever the Gen II's have below the rear seats, and place the sub on the floor of the truck. Fold the seat down and see how much room there is between the seat (at it's normal resting position) and sub. If there is atleast 2" of space between the sub and seat you should be able to make a custom fiberglass sub enclosure like mine. I have about 1" between the sub magnet and the bottom of the enclosure (so the subs vent can breathe) and 3/4" from the sub cone to the seat (so the sub doesn't hit the seat). I had make the enclosures so the seat sits up about 1" higher in the front, but it didn't affect the rear seating.

Message: hey DSW, I got a 1998 Dakota club cab and I need at least 6' of depth for my two orion P10D2 Subs that I wanna put in my truck under the rear seat. I was wondering how deep your subs are and how long is the storage area that you've made cause i need somewhere to put my orion HCCA 250 GS amp and it's 18' long. if your box meets my needs I was wondering if it would be possible for you to send me the plans that you have for you box. if you are willing to part with them, please send them to...

Message: Ummm,,,, plans? I have some rough drawings and templates for the side peices that I could scan and Email. Alot of the design was done on the fly since this was a 1-off project. If I get the time later this week I'll scan the drawings and templates and Email away.
The mounting depth of the RF XLC 10's are around 4.5". I added 1" for the box depth so the subs vent could breathe, the box depth is about 5.5", only good for a sub with 4.5" mounting depth. These boxes are also pretty small and you will need a sub that is happy in a confined space. The XLC's will go down to .7 cuft and the boxes are at .7 cuft after accounting for the sub displacement. I sacrfificed some SQ going from the optimal airspace in my old enclosure to minimal air space in these enclosures. I was looking into RF's new subs that are designed for .65 cuft optimal air space, I bet they would sound awsome in these enclosures as long as the mounting depth is OK.
Space between the boxes is 21+", just long enough to stow the jack. If your looking at putting in the Orion subs you could modify my plans for more air space, but you'll probably end up relocating the rear seat hinges higher. When I was calculating the air volume I found that I would need a higher box to get any significant air volume increase. You might be able to get away with utilizing the top stud/nut to secure the seat hinges instead of the top and bottom.
I'll see what I can do to get the plans Emailed. Check out the URL chase posted, I referenced this when I was building my glass enclosures, some good pointers.

Message: hey, thanks alot for the tips and helpful hints. a friend of mine and I were thinkin that we would prolly have to raise up the back seat but one other guy on here, casedeez i think was gettin rid of a box that could mount subs up to 7' deep with no raising of the seat. i couldn't believe it and now it's sold and he doesn't have any drawings so i'll prolly end up builing one from scratch. if you could e-mail those, even rough drawings of your plans that would give me some where to start.
thnx
