Subject: Hi-pass/Low-pass settings IP: Logged
Message: Are there any "rules of thumb" for setting the hi-pass and low-pass freq. for speaker and sub amps? I have my speaker amp set to hi-pass at 80 Hz, and my sub amp to low-pass at 80 Hz.
Any input on if these should be set differently, or what kind of sound would "encourage" you to modify the settings?

Message: 80Hz is where mine is at as well. It really depends on your midrange drivers, the lower they will handle the better. Most 6.5"s are OK down at 120Hz, some can handle 80Hz but 60Hz is too low for sure.
You can overlap (100 low/ 80 hi) for more mid-bass or underlap (100 hi / 80 low) if it sounds muddy. Keep in mind most crossovers are 12dB/octave so even at 80 hi & low there is alot of overlap occuring. If your crossovers are 24 or 36dB/octave there will be less overlap and you might be able to go lower on you mids and they'll still sound clean.
When adjusting crossovers I normally turn the subwoofer off temporarly and set the hi-pass for the mids first, since once the subs come on they will "mask" the (often sloppy) lower range of the mids.
