Subject: 8" sub help IP: Logged
Message: I have a custom box that replaces my factory center console. It has space for 2 - 8" subs, each in a seperate compartment. Each box is sealed with approx .3 cubic feet of air space However, since the it's not fiberglassed yet, I would still be able to make ports, but the volume will stay at .3 cubic feet.
I'm looking for some solid speakers to fill it with, and I really have absolutly no experience with smaller subs or sealed boxes. Any suggestions?
Also, what's the difference with sealed and ported boxes? I've heard that with sealed, you get a quick and responsive beat, but ported boxed have a much deeper hard hit. I've only used ported boxes before (with 10's), how different will it really be? I do like heavy bass, but will I be dissapointed with the setup?

Message: dont sell your system short by getting some 8 inchers. Nothing under 10 is good for clarity, and definitly not for bass either. So, stay with 10" and above.

Message: I don't agree that a properly installed 8 doesn't sound as good as a 10. I've had both, and the difference in sound is not noticable enough for me to worry about.
Others do have differing opinions though, and that's cool.
As for the console box, with only .3 of air space to work with I would not try to port. A ported box generally needs more airspace then sealed.
Most of the 8's that I've seen require more then .3 (.35-.65) in a sealed enclosure.
For the amount of space that you have, I would leave 'em sealed and ensure that you have a sufficiently beefy amp to drive whatever subs you do install.
FYI, I an driving a single Kicker S8L7 with a 300 watt Rockford amp. I like the sound that I get with this.

Message: Agree with all of Lurkin points - 8"s can hit VERY hard if installed properly.
As for ported vs sealed here are the basics:
Ported will be LOUDER
Sealed will go DEEPER
I prefered the sound of sealed boxes, I could careless about max SPL... been there done that, don't want a hearing aid at age 40, so I'll take sound quaility and deep bass instead.
Also a ported box will have to be bigger then a sealed box thus it might be tough when stuffing subs into the center console.
