Subject: Possible to Install Sub System <$200? IP: Logged
Message: I have roughly 200 dollars saved up from Christmas. I want to install a sub somewhere in my 94 regular cab (tiny) dakota, and I am contemplating whether or not i should buy a clarion srv303 sub- all-in-one, powered sub, that is designed to fit behind bucket seats or underneath seats in a pickup- its only 3 inches deep- what do you guys think? Or could i possibly install like a 5 or 6 inch sub box behind my seats? I really don't think i could fit that behind my seat- perhaps i could email somebody pictures of my interior if they want, but theres not much room..
But one of the biggest circumstances is that i need /want it all for under 200 dollars- i also have a 60 dollar best buy cert., so i could buy wiring there. What do you guys think? Should i just save up and wait til later to install? I'm definitely NOT as "savvy" as other ppl- i can't custom make any box or cram things under my seat, so i would prefer to just buy that clarion srv303 , and mount in in the middle, behind me.
One more question - when you have a powered sub, i dont need an amp for my speakers, do i? thats always just optional- so you can listen to your music louder. if it helps any, i have a sony cdx mp30 cd deck (plays mp3, has i think 2 rca pre-outs), sony 5.5inch xplods, and the back 5X7 my dad (ha) installed (but i bought) in the rear- i think pioneers...the system sounds relatively ok, but it defintiely lacks deep bass, which is what i would like to have.
Is the installation of a all-in-one sub like the srv303 hard? Do you think my dad and I could install it ourselves (my dad knows alot about autos), or will i need to spend even more money to have best buy/circuit city/ovation install it?
Thanks alot, you can email me at rscheidt1@yahoo.com

Message: Check E-bay man, you can find an Xplode amp for under $100 (new) and get yourself an Audiobahn 10" or 12" (again new). All you need to do is build a box that will fit behind the seat.
I know it may not take an SPL meet, but it will boom for your buck ($200 in your case).
Last, but not least, order this kit for all your wiring needs. I've bought 2 of these kits in the past and they work exactly like the ones that say "streetwires" or "monster cable", except you only have to pay 1/5th the price.
There's my $.02

Message: here is my opinion...save some money and get good stuff with a warrenty and professionally installed at a store. ebay can screw u if your not carefull. the clarion is nice for maybe a starter, but after u listen to some nice subs or a system, then you will be wishing u had saved your money. i would go this route... get a 10" sub with a small amp and have it mounted behind the seat. the sub in the middle so it will fill better in the cab. but if u want to go crazy u can fit 2 10" but that be cramming it plus u need room to mount the amp. for products i would go for pioneer all the way if u just want some bass for your buck. they are cheep and clean...but if u just want BASS then go audiobahn, but that be more expensive...and the sub wiring is easy set up depends on how u want to wire it 4ohm or 2ohm...but there is my $.02 lata

Message: Ok, if you know what your doing and are PATIENT, you can get awesome stuff off of eBay for cheap..alot of times brand new.
As far as brands go I like JL Audio, Alpine, or MTX..Infinity Kappa perfects if I had the money.
Lastly, unless you are planning on doing competitions DONT BUY A RIPOFF WIRE KIT FROM BEST BUY! or any other Audio store. Its simply a waste of money. I bought all of the stuff to wire my system with at Lowe's and Autozone or eBay, for less than $25 total. Try finding an amp kit for $25.
-You can get a Fuse from Lowes or Radioshack.
-RCA's I got at Autozone.
-8ga. Power/ground wires and small remote turn on wire I got from Lowes in their bulk by the foot section for $12 or so.
Like I said this will be more than adequate if your just wanting a good sounding system for cheap. Dont buy into all that Monster cable/rockford fosgate/streetwires wiring BS.

Message: Don't bother going to Best Buy, audio stores, Home Depot or Lowes for the amp wiring. WalMart has pretty decient amp wiring kits, $10 for 100-250W amp wire kit, $20 for 300-400W amp wire kit. They come with heavy guage power and ground wire, fused power lead, remote wire, RCA's on the $10 kit, and other misc connectors. The power and ground wire in these kits is better quality than your going to find at a hardware store too, since it's fine stranded wire. Not all wire is created equaly, 12GA fine stranded wire will conduct current better than 12GA coarse stranded wire, it's called "surface effect" where the power likes to travel down the outside of the strands of wire instead of the center of the strands of wire. (Sorry for the electronics lesson.)
These are definately the best bang for the buck. I probably spent $500 over the past 20 years buying specialty wire, connectors and RCA's for amp connections, not any more, Walmart is just down the block.

Message: Thanks to Boner, fung chow, Leviticus, DSW, and Jerry Atric for their responses/comments.
I think my notion of buying a wire kit from best buy definitely revealed my naivete/unexperience with the subject; i definitely don't think i'll be using that gift certificate to buy a $50 kit from best buy anymore. Thanks for all the tips- they were helpful.

Message: 94 Dakota, If you looking for some bass, simple and cheap, just throw in a powered sub box and buy an amp wire kit. Quick easy install and your done in a couple of hours.
If you want more bass then your looking at a sub $40-100, box $30, amp $50-100 and wire kit $20. You can do it for around $200 easy it just takes some research.
Do yourself a favor and do some research woofers and amps so you can get a good one. No need to spend your hard earned money on a bunch of junk, only to blow it up and buy it again.
If your on a budget, Ebay is the best place to go. But you need to know what your looking for and buyer beware, no warranties, no returns. Also check out the sellers feedback, some lowlife out there is selling blown speakers. Selling blown speakers is like selling bald tires, no life left in them, but they might make a nice garage decoration.
If you need someone leading you by the hand and telling you what to buy then Best Buy and Circuit City are the place to go. They also offer excellent return policies and warranties, but, your going to pay twice or more what you would off Ebay.

Message: Add this amp
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3069177029&category=39737
to the loaded sub box on my last post and your home free, everything you wanted for about $150-$200.
The last post is for a Qlogic truck box and RF XLC 10" sub. I have 2 - XLC 10's in my truck pushed by a RF 301S amp and they rock. A single XLC should handle the 201S bridged without problems since its rated at 200W RMS and 400W peak.
The only thing you will need besides these two auction items is an amp wiring kit from WalMart and a couple feet of 12 or 14 GA wire to go from the amp to the sub box.
This is the good stuff I was talking about, you won't regret the purchase.

Message: The setup DSW suggested would be great for under $200, one thing though - if you choose to purchase a sub-in-a-box, get the dimensions from the guy and make sure it WILL fit before you buy it.
I have 2 of these 10's in my garage right now, that I've had in 2 different trucks and for the money, they do sound pretty good.
But again, if you get a setup like the one above, don't bid unless you are sure it will fit behind your seat. I always make make-shift boxes out of cardboard to see how it fits. Good luck!
