Subject: replacement infinity speakers confused IP: Logged
Message: OK, I have searched these boards and
thought I had it figured out. But Now I'm just
confused. I recently bought a 98 durango with
the infinity system. All the speakers seem to
be blown. I hear lots of rattling from them.
Many posts I have read are from people who
have replaced everything, some have
apparently replaced only the speakers. I saw
several posts recommending the infinity
6000cs and 6002i (reference series)
speakers (4 ohm) as stock (2 ohm)
replacements. Thats what I want to do. I don't
want to replace the head unit, or the amp
(anyone know where thats located? ha! thats
only been answered about a thousand times!)
I'm not an autiophile, I just want to play music
without the rattle. I asked at two shops and an
internet dealer about it and they all told me it
won't work, can't mix the aftermarket speakers
with the factory head and amp. So does
anybody know what the real story is? has
anyone replaced the factory 2 ohm speakers
with 4 ohm speakers and used the factory
amp and head unit? If i've missed something
and I really do need the factory speakers does
anyone have a complete set in good condition
for sale? I really don't want to pay the $112
EACH (front) and $115 EACH (rear) the dealer
quoted me. Thanks

Message: The answer I got from a stereo shop is that you could replace just the speakers from the infinity system w/aftermarket but the factory infinity amp just isn't powerful enough to really push any aftermarket speakers so they sound good. The simplest solution is to replace the (6) speakers [(2) sailpanel tweeters, (2) 6-1/2" woofers for btm of frt dr(the frt drs could be bought as a "component system, woofers & tweeters" and 6-1/2" 2 or 3-ways in the rear doors, and add a 130-150 wat 2-way external amp.] This will no longer use the factory amp but the component system will have built in crossover to split up the signals correctly. Expect to spend about $500 to do this would decent stuff, not high end. High end more of course. Hope this helps as I have been toying with this also
2002 QC 4x4 Sport Plus, 4.7L, auto, Patriot Blue, Tire & Handling group, Heavy Duty Service group, Leer cap w/out windows, Mopar Step bars and roof rack, Rhino liner in bed and on step bars, Pace Edwards Power Tailgate lock 3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

Message: I had a blown front speaker in my '99 Dakota with the Infiniti system. Replaced just the two front with Pioneer 1767s. Sounds fine, and the 1767s have the adapter rings so you don't have to drill new holes, though it is not a big deal either way.
