quick question : better to go 3/4 MDF for the lid of a box (that will be housing 2 10's) ? My plan was to use 1/4 hardwood [almost like a harder mdf] yay? nay?

Nay, the 1/4" will flex and distort the sub. Go with the 3/4 MDF, it's pretty much what everyone uses for sub boxes because it is very dense and won't flex. Well that's unless your building a realy big box for 15's then bracing is needed to stop the flexing.
