Subject: In-dash cd changer IP: Logged
Message: Anybody have any idea how difficult it might be to replace the single cd/cassette unit from my '01 with the 6-disc in-dash unit from an '04? The dimensions look exactly the same, but I have no idea about the electronics. Is it just a straight swap, or is there more involved than pulling the old one out and plugging the new one in?

Message: if the '01 Dak has the "rounded" radio faceplate (which I think it does), then all you'll need is an adapter for the wire harness. The '01 radios use two 7-pin connectors, and the '02 and later radios use a single 22-pin connector and a different plug for the antenna cable.

Message: Just get an aftermarket CD/MP3 reciever. You can put 100 mp3 songs on 1 disk. Why you want to fumble around with 6 CD's in this day and age?

Sound quailty! MP3s sound pretty bad due to the compression when compared the original CD recording.

Message: If I could find an aftermarket MP3 player with a combination 6-disc changer, I would be happy, but such a thing does not seem to exist. I have about 300 CD's that I do not have the time to transfer to MP3 format, and I prefer the quality of the original better anyway.

Message: If you can here the difference between the CD original and an mp3 version you are 1) not encodnig at a high enough bit rate or 2) have a studio monitor quality sound system in your car that can overcome the road noise.
sorry but mp3's encoded using LAME at a decent bit rate can NOT be distinguished from the CD original in all but spectrum analyzer tests.
Get an Ipod, or its cheaper competitors, and either hook it to your head units aux niput or us an FM transmitter. I will admit though that an fm transmitter IS going to reduce fidelity for sure.

Depends on the source material. With most metal tracks, I'm happy with 192k. But things like jazz, blues, and classical are still perceptibly degraded at higher bitrates. That MPEG "Swishiness" is annoyingly apparent in the highs, cymbals especially.
