Subject: Amp Location for Dakota Club Cab

Message:
I have thought and thought about this, and I think I have decided on a solution. I was thinking of putting my two amps in the cab and having them on each side behind the seat on the floor, but I don't like that idea because if I ever do have someone in the back then their feet would crunch my amps unless I had something over them to protech them. So, I think I am going to make a box for the amps with a plexiglass front that is removeable and has vents made in them for air to the amps. I am going to have a separate battery for the amps to hook up to and I am going to hook it in the bed of my truck at the back towards the cab. I will just have to make it so it doesn't slide foward by using those bed bars or a elastic hook thing...something. It would be easy to run the wires to the head and subs because of the drainage plugs, and the battery can be connected to the other battery in the engine compartment to keep it from draining, and the amps can connect to the battery in the bed. I have a fiberglass cover on my bed so it shouldn't be affected by weather. Thats the easiest thing I can think of because I don't have room in the cab without having alot of crap on my floors with wires everywhere. My subs are under the rear seats with the mtx thunderform. Where is everyone else putting there amps!!! I don't want my inside of the cab looking ghetto. Give me some ideas..thanks

So you have no room under the front seats to place the amps.

I mounted mine to the roof of the cab in the back above the Club Cab part. Out of the way and it looks cool. A real pain in the Azz to do though.

Most amps will overheat if upside down.

True, that's why mine aren't upside down. They are right side up and have small electric fans to help keep them cool as well, as they are in custom built housings that have breather holes in them. Hard to explain I guess. Looks awesome though and I've yet to see anything like it. Cause it alot of work I guess.

First Off i would like to ask you why you need another battery. How many watts are you pushing and Why don't you look into installing a capacitor first. Second what kind of amps are you using and how big are they meaning length and width. Most amps should be able to fit under the seats. I am currently running about 900 watts in my truck and the only thing that I have on my electical system is a capacitor. I just really think having another battery in the bed of the truck is going to give you nothing but headaches. If you do not want your truck to look ghetto inside then what about the outside. I think that the battery box in the bed would look ridiculous ghetto. I think if I were you I would rethink you power needs and if you really need an extra battery. Those subs in the mtx thunderform do not need extreme amounts of power so I can not see where the extra battery is needed. Just my 2 cents...

The extra battery is so that it doesn't drain the main battery and my lights won't dim everytime the bass hits. I have about 2000watts (1000watts rms) going on the subs and amps. I am not sure how you would fit them under the seats, they are about 3-4 in tall or so... maybe more its just a estimate, I did not go downstairs to find out the exact height. If I did get a different battery it would be a Optima red top battery and they are made for audio and they look really nice. :)
I am just trying to figure out how to get what I want in my truck without taking up room in the cab. my truck bed isn't used, I have a A.R.E. lid on it.

I have seen batteries mounted under the bed. Just get a steel battery box and weld it to the frame and it will be out of the way.

There is certainly no reason for you to get another battery, BELIEVE ME! I have a ton of stuff on my truck and i dont need it! Just so you can get an idea of what ive got! 2 MTX 500D amps, 2 MTX Thunder 564 amps. In dash tv, XM, X-box and a power inverter! (THATS JUST THE STEREO) on the out side i have 7 large 100w lights (5 on roll bar and 2 on brush guard). and a set of aftermarket fog lights! NOW all that i am useing is AN OPTIMA DEEP CYCLE BATT. but its the big one andthe connect your components with large power wire i am useing 0 gauge! make sure that you run a wire to the alternator and the chasis. my lights dont dimm and i love it. ( no cap either) the alternator is the fastest way of getting power ist just very inconsistent! so back to the original question, you do not need the extra batt. besides it would be a pain to wire and i wouldent look good!
This is just my opinion, but im giving you some advice here too!

yea, I agree with Ryan... I have an Optima deep cycle too (size 34) . It can take a lot of abuse, provides lots of juice, and charges up quick. The Optima drops right in. Right now I use it with a 2000 watt power inverter that draws a around 200 amps max.

If the engine is running, you can pull an average of about 100 amps without much problem. Much more than that and the battery will start draining pretty quickly.

0 gauge or heavier wire is definitely a good thing too. Then you don't have to worry as much about voltage drop and the wires getting hot.
