Subject: 15" soundstream SPL pimpin

Just picked up a Soundstream SPL 15 and made a custom box for it so it looks real good in between the back seats of my 97 x-cab. I payed 100 bucks for it because my friend is getting 4 10's and I have only 150 watts going to it out of this ghetto BOSS amp and I am metering at 140 and I bet most of you have never felt 140 because I thought I had before but no.

Go to your local audio store and they will check for free or around 15 bucks and they cost around 900 dollars so I don't own one

I just got 2 SPL 15s I had ordered yesterday. They will be running off either a Soundstream Class A 10.0, or a 10.2. Either way, they will be getting 500 watts each. Should hit just under 150, over 150 with some tweaking.

I own Audio Mechanics in MI. you can get 140db out of 1 $100.00 12 and a 200 watt amp.

140 huh, ok not with no 150 watts buddy. Man you guys need caps, 4 gauge - 1 gauge power. Hope you dont have a factory radio, you need more voltage to go to your amplifier. Soundstream used to be cool but when a company sells out there quality goes down hill. Go with MMATS kinda pricey but there the sh@t, JL Audio, MTX Audio, or Xtant. Then we can talk about DB. Joel 150 DB is a lot. Its hard to hit that Ill guess youll hit around 145-146 you need power to run that amp you have. Hooking it up to a factory battery will only produce around at tops 300 watts. You gotta understand there more to DB than a 1000 watt amp, its the power you can run to it that makes all the diffence and of course the quality of that amp. Ive had 2 12" W3 Jls and a 500/1 Jl Amp. All sealed I hit 145.6. Another thing DYNAMAT you need DYNAMAT. ALso to ever 3db is double the air pressure.

You guys are hilarious. I've probably owned more soundstream amps then most of you have owned combined.

Joel, nice set-up. I used to have a modded rubi 702 on a pair of old solo baric 15's running at 1 ohm. LOUD!

dak, yes the new meters are stiff.

Dru, are you kidding me? The equipment costs too much cause no one will cut you a break on one, the SQ of their class D amps is so bad I can only compare it to a drunk monkey farting in a paper bag. Last and most important is the customer service. THERE IS NONE!

Dukes, your typical. Caps are garbage, dynamat is way over priced and even with stock electrical system a 10.0 or 10.2 or even a 1002 will blow your 300 watt estimate out of the water. I've done an install with 4 sealed 12's and a 700 watt amp and did 152's legal on the dash. Highest at a comp was a 151.2 keep in mind the world record that year in our class was a 150.8

Twolak, those clarion amps are WAY over rated. I'd honestly be suprised to see more than 500 watts without higher voltage inputs that I'm not sure it would even hold up to. That score is either outlaw, you have a wall, or thier meter is way off.

No flames please, just stating some facts and opinions.

yo there is no way u could hit a 159 in a firebird with one 15 for who ever posted that. You are just plain crazy. Car is to small and not enough air space. I have an explorer with 2 audiobahn 12's and an audiobahn 400 watt amp and I pushed 143 decibles. I have never heard a car with one 15 hit any where near 150. So for who ever posted they did they are nuts.

Ummm, So why do caps "HURT" SPL? It's like having a secondary battery connected 12" to 18" away from the amp. Instead of all those billions of electrons having to travel through 15' of wire and a fuse, the cap can provide a significant amount of power when the amp needs to draw a large amount of current on insane bass hits.

The only time the cap realy does anything is when the voltage on the + battery wire drops below the caps charged voltage. Then the cap starts to discharge and compensate for the low voltage on the + battery wire by supplying massive amounts of current at it's charged voltage. I don't get how supplying your amp with all the voltage and current that It's demanding could "HURT" SPL?????????????/

because as soon as the cap discharges(on the order of ms), it becomes a load to the electrical system....so instead of having those billions of electrons running from the alt. to the amp, they're running to the amp AND the cap, causing voltage drop, and thus less power for the amp.......

Yeah, but the cap charges within a couple of ms between the wild azz bass hits when the amp isn't drawing a large amount of current, so the cap's current draw isn't a problem. The cap smooths out the power surges on the amps + battery wire and provides a power reserve for the amp. The cap is a load on the electrical system when it's charging, but it's just replacing what the amp pulled out of the cap, and what the amp would have pulled out of the electrical system. Adding a cap won't put an additional load on the electrical system that the amp wouldn't have put on the electrical system in the first place.

Let's say the amp normally draws 10 amps, but wants 30 amps of power "right now" on a hard bass hit, the cap discharges 10 amps to assist the electrical system. When the amp is chillin and only drawing 10 amps, the cap can re-charge and draw the 10 amps depleted by the amp from the electrical system. Without a cap the electrical system would be seeing a load of 10amps-30amps-10amps-30amps-10amps-30amps-10amps-30amps as the bass hits, with a cap the electrical system will see a load of 20 amps constant as the bass hits and the cap re-charges.

we're talking SPL numbers here...one burp...not driving down the street....

as for just how long it takes to charge a cap..... http://www.bcae1.com/

Doesn't matter wheather it's one hard bass hit (burp) or driving down the street, the cap serves the same purpose. To assist the electrical system in delivering one large burst of power to the amp, wheather it's for one "burp" or between bass hits.

If the vehicles electrical system could deliver massive amounts of power to the amp and the amp's power connections were sufficient to handle a large amount of current, the need for a cap would be negligable. Problem is, most vehicles are supplied with 75-150 amp alternators which are not designed for such a large "additional" current draw, or a burst of such a large current draw. Forgot to mention that all that power is being drawn across a fuse, talk about a bottle neck.

Throw in a second alternator, larger and more batteries, 1/0 power and ground wires, omit the fuse and I guess I don't see the need for a cap. But who wants to spend $500-1000 for this when a $50 cap will bridge the gap.

All good information on caps at that site. The author mentions that he hasn't seen caps improve SPL, but says nothing about caps hurting SPL either. He seems to be sitting on the fence about weather caps help SPL or don't make a difference in SPL.

For anyone that does not know and want to see loud system go to www.dbdragracing.com to see all the different cars with systems and how much they are hitting. My loudest spl was 150.6 with 4 15" xt and 2 vr4000d in a expedition. That is loud for an suv. I'm just in a process in putting two soundstream 15" xxx subs and 4 3500xxx soundstream amps to hit more than 153dbs in street c.

They all are pros in dbdrag my friend Roger he hits in the 171+ dbs using soundstream. Soundstream is one of the best amplifiers if not the best, that do not require alof of batteries like others do.
