Subject: crazy idea.. would it be ok to do? IP: Logged
Message: hey, i have 2 amps in my brothers truck, an orion cobalt 230 that connects to preouts, and a jensen a-30 that connects to the head unit's amp out. it worked great for a couple days, but the amp inside the head unit died, and now the jensen wont play because it doesnt accept preamp signals. as it is now, the orion is running 2 6x9s and nothing else, the jensen is running 2 12's. would it put too much strain to hook the jensen to the orion's speaker out? or would it fry something? i would really appreciate if someone would reply before i just try it and possibly mess something up. thanks in advance.

Message: The Orion would toast it for sure since the Jensen was designed to handle low wattage input.
I'd get a new amp that takes pre-amp inputs and ditch the Jensen... they are junk compared to the Orion anyway.
You should always run pre-amps because each time you amplify the music you get distortion. So running something off the decks power is just amplifing the already distored music. Thus it's a bad idea.

Message: You can get a preamp adapter. It is usually for stereos without preamps but should work in reverse.

The adapter is just a series of resisters to limit the current.
Your speaker outs on your head unit have a max signal of about 24 volts AC peak to peak (with bridged outputs). The adapter just uses a resisters to divide the voltage down near 1 volt AC peak to peak.
Now, if you were to reverse that sucker and drive the pre amp out signal which is typically 1 volt ac peak to peak into the rca side, you would get something much less on the other side making it worse.
The high level input on your amp is just a series of resisters inside the amp to divide the voltage before going to the amplifier section. If someone opend up your amp they could easily add pre amp input RCA terminals.
If you're desperate, just connect the wires from your stock speakers to the input of that sucker. It may not be as clean as your pre amp out from your head unit would be.
