Subject: mono amp or two channel amp???? IP: Logged
Message: Hi I going to be getting a stereo system for my jeep (front and rear speakers CD player subwoofers and amp)
I was thinking of getting two 12" mtx thunder 8000 so should I get a mono 800 watt amp and wire the subs together, or a 2 channel 1600 watt amp and run one on each channel What would make the best sound?
And should I get a CD player with subwoofer output?
Thanks

Message: Any help would be appreciated.
Would a mono 800 watt amp with the subs wired together give both subs 800 watts each
or 400 each?

Message: I would get a stereo amp (800 x 2) that you can bridge (1600 X 1), then get the right ohms subs and run both of them off that (800 to each sub).
And yes by all means get a head unit (or EQ, or crossover) with a subwoofer output that allows you to adjust crossover frequency and volume.

Message: You need to look at the specs of the amp and subs. Amp - how many watts per channel at given ohms. Subs - ohm rating, single or dual voice coil. Remember that most amp ratings are maximums and at the lowest recommended resistance (ohm). So if you have the usual 4ohm subs on a separate channels of an amp you are probally getting half of the rated wattage because the amp was measured at 2ohm (in most cases). If the mono amp pushes the maximum at 2ohms then you wire the subs in parallel (pos+pos, neg+neg) and you get all of the power. If you want to go 2 channel then get dual voice coils if possible.
