Subject: new radio install IP: Logged
Message: Within the next or so I'll be purchasing a new deck (as soon as I figure out which one for ~$300)
Anyway, my stock AM/FM/Tape deck is huge compared with these newer decks...what do I do with all the extra space?
I have NEVER installed a car radio before, but assume with a little guidabce I can do this. When complete however, I want it to look as stock as installation as possible. A friend at work said he bought some type of spacer to cover up the hole left behind.
Any help would be appreciated.

Message: Just did that a couple months ago. go to someplace like circuit city, You will need the adaptor for your year and model, it will take yo the extra space and look factory. If your dak is newer (mine is an 02) you will need an antena adaptor and get the wiring harness adaptor for your model and year so you dont cut up the factory harness it will make install go so much easier good luck drew

Message: Good info 2nd Dak.
I have a 99 Dakota, so I'm unsure if I'll need this antenna adapter you referenced.
I plan to apply simple logic when I install this radio. Essentially lookiing at my stock radio...seeing where everything is plugged in, then doing the same for the new one.
I'm not an audiophile, but I do enjoy good sound. Right now I plan to spend around $300 for a new deck...I'm really trying to find one that has the flap that comes down and 'hides' the deck when not in use. There are so many decks out there though, it's tough to figure which is the best for my application. I never had such a hard time spending money before! :-)
Thanks

Message: If you never done this before I highly recommending having someone else show you OR getting the radio from Crutchfield. You'll pay a bit more (like $50 extra) but they will have all the adaptors and kits you'll need plus super helpful instructions and tech support. My father installed his own radio himself with thier help since he was too cheap to call me long distance ;) Looking at the radio will not tell you which wires go where because the factory just has one big plug with about 20 small wires going into it.
