Subject: Port Placement IP: Logged
Message: Does the placement of ports in a box matter? The diagram rockford fosgate gives with my sub shows a square box, I am building a wedge. It needs three ports and I was just wondering if it mattered how I placed the ports in my box. Thanks in advance for the help.

Message: Yes port placement makes a difference. Port shape, size, and location are all important. Rounds ports are more efficient and have less port noise. Slot ports use the side of the box as one side of your port. This makes a difference in your port length. If you port is too small (they say you need 10sq in and you put a 10x1 in port) it will have port noise. Since you stated you were building a wedge I'll save you the heartache and tell you to make sure if the ports are going on the angled surface make sure your port is cut off angled too. (If they said 10" long make sure it's cut on the same angle as the box so it's 10" all the way not 10 at the bottom and 7 at the top or it will throw your tuning way off. For just general placement the sub(s) and port(s) should be on the same plane/side of box cause it's more efficient. There are some designs and because of it's placement in certain vehicles will cause a bend in the soundwaves to make it much louder. Example, CRX boxes have sub(s) firing up but the port(s) aiming back.
