Subject: what size amp do I need? IP: Logged
Message: Hi im new to stereo systems and I don't know what watt amplfier I need and if i am to hook all the(speakers tweeters and subwoofers) to the amplfier or just the subwoofers. I am thinking about getting two 500 watt speakers, two 700 watt 12" subwoofers and two 300 watt tweeters.
Shoud I add all the watts together and get a 3000 watt amplfier? Sounds wrong to me .... Is the amp hooked to all or just the subs ??? I am lost here

Message: By "speakers" do you mean full-range speakers? I've never seen 500w "speakers" or 300w tweaters, but then again, I'm not into competition either. Regular tweaters (about 3/4-inchers) run in the 10-100w range, and you need a hp x-over for them. For full-range speakers, those run anywhere in between 20-275w I'm guessing. Subs of course go from about 50 to about as high as you want. And it would be pretty tough to hook all of your speakers up to one amp and have it sound good. Have a fairly hefty sub-amp for you subs, and then like a 4-channel amp (Kicker makes some powerfull ones...) for your full-range and tweaters, and tap some hp (high-pass) caps in for them to filter out the bass since that's taken care of. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I hope this helps.

Message: Please list which speakers you want to use, as it sounds like you're talking about Pyramid or other generic brand that adds the peak rating of each speaker in a set.
In other words, they actually take about 25w RMS. Any more power and the cones start to rip ;)
Or you can tell us what sizes you need and how much you have to spend.

Message: Thanks Brock that does help. And the speakers are full-range 4 way speakers. So should I get a 1400 watt amp for the two 700 watt subs and around a 1600 watt 4 channel amp for the full range speakers and the tweeters right?
and does a 4 channel amp mean that you can set 4 different speakers at different watts?
Here are some links to some of the speakers I'm looking at. Is this too big for my Jeep Wrangler.

Cuspid, Pyramid, etc, they are only good for replacing factory speakers. Put any amount of real power to them and they'll disort or even blow.
What year Jeep Wrangler? Are you on a budget? (a real set of speakers/subs/amps/wireing/etc is going to cost a bit more than what the auctions items are going for).

Message: Thanks for the advice Jizzler. I was thinking that thay were to cheap to be very high quality.
So what kind of system should I get? I have an 89 Jeep Wrangler with a soft top. I am working on a budget . I don't want the cheapest system, just a good one for the money. I have to replace all of the speakers and the cd player because someone tried to steal it and tore both back 6x9 3 way speakers and broke the cd player the front 4x6 speakers docent work ether.

Message: Stay away from cheap crap like that. It doesn't matter how many watts they handle, the simple fact is an $18 speaker will sound like an $18 speaker. The louder you listen to cheap crap, the more you're going to notice the distortion.

Message: Go to a local audio shop and listen to some speakers then decide for yourself.
Avoid those 3 and 4 ways, instead get a good set of components or given your budget (and available speaker sizes) 2 ways or plates most likely. Around 50 watts is all you need for your mids & tweets and figure about 200 watts to a single 10" sub if your on a budget.
You'll need to spend around $400-$600 to get anything worth listening to IMHO. If your not going to spend that much just get a set of 2 ways and forget the amp and subs since they are costly additions.

Message: On a low budget, there's nothing wrong with a nice head unit and 4 good speakers.
My first car was an '89 LeBaron. Put in a Pioneer head unit (22w x 4), Sony Xplod 6x9's in the back, and Pioneer 5.25's in the front.
Bass blockers (the cheaper alternitive to crossovers) will make those front 4x6's sound better by cutting out lower frequencies. I used 150hz blockers for my 5's.

Message: If you're here, I'm assuming he has a dakota. If so, what year and cab? Is leg room an issue (if he has a regular cab)? Answer these questions and Im sure someone will help you out.
I would personally prefer Alpine Type R's or Infinity Kappa (or Kappa Perfects) over the Memphis, but that is only my opinion. If your son has heard the subs and wants them, get 'em.
If he has a Club Cab, one option is to find an unloaded MTX thunderform enclosure and put 2 10" Memphis subs in there.
As for an amp, make sure, MAKE SURE it is rated in RMS or CEA power, not dynamic, peak, or any other Best Buy crap rating. 500W RMS or CEA will be more than enough (for most people). Make sure the amp is compatible with the subs (in terms of ohm loading). Single Voice Coil 4 ohm subs wired in parallel will give you a 2 ohm load. This is economical to find a 500W amp at 2 ohms or an amp that puts out 2 channels at 250W @ 4 ohms each.
I'm not sure if your familiar with car audio or not, but I hope this points you in the right direction. If you reply, I'll be glad to help you out. Good luck.

Message: Adam: First off, stop yelling. It's early.
Second, is the crunch 1000 W rated in RMS? The one Crunch 1000W amp I looked at was only rated @ 500W x2 @ 2 ohm DYNAMIC. So thats like 250W RMS x2 @ only 2 ohms, or 125W x2 @ 4 ohms (ish). What is the ohm loading for the subs? Are they Dual Voice Coil? Answer theses questions and I can help you pick out an amp.

Message: um based on what i just read your going to burn your car to the ground. man one person asks a q. about audio and nine others jump in asking similare q's. Ok jeep dude Trav dont install a system in a jeep its not worth the money I have done it since you dont have a hard top you will loose most of your sound any way. just get the nice over head bar they make with 6x9's. peedy with the JL W7 do you realize they are top of the line subs? you need a really nice amp. your looking about 1000w per amp RMS and you need a Really nice custom box. not cheep. but if your set on the w7's go with a kicker 1200w mono block class D and get one per sub, or alpine makes an amazing little amp the PDX-1 its about 800$ per amp and again you will need two.
