does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the stock sound system(not the infinity)without replacing the deck ? I have set aside the $600 i would(or should!) have spent to get the Infinity system when i ordered my new 2003 dakota QC. I know this probably isnt enough of a budget but have to start somewhere ! any thoughts on what I might do first ?

For minimal budget, I would recommend replacing the speakers all around and if you have enough left over, throw in an amp so your head unit doesn't have to work so hard. I'm not going to name brands because it just sparks argument.

Then pick up the MTX Thunderform and an amp (I used the MTX Thunder202) for some bass. In my '03 QC, I have the Infinity system and found bass was lacking pretty bad. With just the Thunderform and amp added on, it's good enough for my liking and it only cost around $300. At some point I want to replace the Infinity crap with something better, but it's not a real high priority.

Swap the stock Infinity crap for the real Infinity Referrence series components... then and a small 4 channel amp and an 8" sub - you'll might be surprized how good it can sound.
