Subject: Aftermarket Changers? IP: Logged
Message: I have searched thru the archives and have seen several questions asking which aftermarket CD changers can be used with OEM head units with CD changer controls. It seems that Alpine is the only manufacturer being used that isn't FM modulated. Does anyone know WHO MAKES THE STEREO EQUIPMENT FOR DODGE OTHER THAN INFINITY? Is Alpine the only aftermarket choice for a direct line CD changer? I don't want to go with an FM modulated unit if I can avoid it. I checked out www.pie.net and they list info for Kenwood. I talked to BestBuy installers, GoodGuys installers, and the local boneheads at my nearest Dealer, and no one seems to know who makes/distributes the non-Infinity equipment. Surely, someone on this forum must know!
Thanks for the help,
AC

All Chrysler radios are made by three companies: Alpine, Mitsubishi, and Huntsville. Changers are made by Alpine and Mitsubishi. Speakers and amplifiers are usually made by Harman (Infinity is a Harman brand.) Don't know if that's what you were asking, though.
As for changers that will work with your truck, what year is it? That makes a difference since Chrysler changed the audio communication bus in the late '90s.

Message: Traded in my 2000 QC and just bought a 2003 QC 4.7L 5spd Auto. Love it. Unfortunately, I got it at the end of the model year and there wasn't much to choose from. Don't ask me why, but the dealer ordered it with a tape deck only. Now I am looking to install a changer but I don't want to buy the Chrysler model for $260 plus $30 for the install kit.

Message: what's the radio model? There should be a three-letter code on the faceplate beginning with R. Probably RBB.

Never heard of "USA Spec" but looking at it, it looks like a rebranded Alpine changer.

Message: the frequency response of the tuner is inferior to that of a direct-plug CD changer. That, and you have extra wiring and a control module to deal with as well.

Message: Ditto. I'm sure FM modulated units work great as an alternative, but I would rather use a direct-line unit for the sound quality and wiring convenience.
Thank you for the info, Jim Z. It looks like I'm gonna go with the Alpine CHM-S630 6-disc changer. I looked more closely at www.pie.net and they also have an adapter for the Alpine units. I was able to get both at LogJamElectronics.com for less than the unit at Crutchfield.

Message: I just bought a USA Spec changer online and from what the guys told me in the local shop where I had it installed, it is just a repackaged Alpine. Works great!
