Subject: popping noise when stereo turns on??
IP: Logged

Message:
man installing everything was a B*TCH ( especially those back panels and the sliding seatbelt adjuster DAMN!) but i finnaly got it all done.. problem is i get a popping when i everything turns on. i am told that this is because the amp is turning on before the head unit. what is the best way around this?? the remotes are hooked together. also, i am getting some noise from my components which i believe is is being caused by the RCA's being too long. rather than buying new RCA's and running them throught the carpet again, can i buy some kind of filter for the RCA's?

For the popping,

People who told you the amp turn on too fast are in the ballpark.

Since you say the remote is connected, maybe you'd like to check if your head unit supports a delay for the amp turn on. If it does set it to the max.

Maybe the amps need to be set to use the remote signal to turn on and not the input levels?

For the noise:
If its hissing (or white noise) I dont't know.
If its interference (engine whine, radio like inference) maybe your power wire comes too close to one of the RCA A filter on the power and return wire is the known solution.

BUT, I'm really new to car audio, lets see what the experts know.

How do you adjust the delay for the amp turn on on a Pioneer?

Are your amps new??? What brand are they? The popping noise is usually caused by the outputs turning on before charging circuit. You are "hearing" the capacitors get power. However, most all amps today have technology to mute the outputs until the charging circuit powers up. If these are new amps check with the manufacturer or vendor. About the other noise, if it's a hum or a whine then its interference and PatH is correct, if its a hiss then if your amps have an input gain (or head unit has output level controls) try turning it down a bit. One "catch-all" solution is to purchase a noise gate, or line driver. If you really wanted to spend more money you could get a balanced line transmiter. (I know Soundstream makes one). this is just what I've gathered. Hope it helps.

Go to a stereo shop and get a relay for your remote. It cost like $1 and should cure the popping noise.

There are two types of relays that are commonly used in 12-volt
automotive applications: Single-pole Double Throw (SPDT) relays, which
have 5 pins, and Single Pole, Single Throw (SPST) relays, which have 4
pins. Depending on the application, you can use either of these; for
remote turn-on leads (see Section 5.11), an SPST relay is fine,
SPDT relays are often used in alarm installations. Make sure that you
get a 12-volt relay - this specifies the voltage required to make the
relay "switch."

The connections on the two types of relays look like this:

SPST SPDT
===================== =====================
(87) (87)
+---------+ +---------+
| --- | | --- |
| | | |
(86) | | | | (85) (86) | | --- | | (87a - center)
| | | | (85 - right)
| | | | | |
+---------+ +---------+
(30) (30)

Pins 85 and 86 connect to the coil which causes the relay to switch.
On both relays, pins 30 and 87 are normally disconnected. When the
relay is activated (switched) pin 30 and 87 are then in contact. The
difference with the SPDT relay is that in the "normal" state, pins 30
and 87a are in contact.

To hook up a relay (either kind) for a remote turn on, make the
following connections:

*Pin 30*
+12 Volts (Battery +)

*Pin 87*
Amplifiers' remote turn-on terminal

*Pin 86*
Head unit remote turn-on lead

*Pin 85*
Ground

*Pin 87a*
No connection (SPDT only)
