Subject: Building a Sub Box IP: Logged
Message: Hey
I am planning on building a sub box for my RC Dakota... But Im kind of lost..
What type of wood do I use?
I nail the pieces together, but what do I use on the edges to make it air tight?
Where Do I get the carpet for the box?
I have a box in my truck right now, a standard Truck Box, but I dont like it. However, it has the little connectors on the outside of the box to hook the wires up to... is this absolutely needed on a sub box?
If you could answer these questions that would be GREAT! Thanks

Message: it all depends on what year your truck is. I have a 2002 SXT R/C that I have built a box for. I used 5/8" MDF board and then used some sylicone to seal the edges like glue and then ran a bead inside just to make sure. As for the carpet I ordered it from www.crutchfield.com for around $32. The first one that I built the spacing that I left for the amp was 12". but in the mean time of building the box I bought a new amp. I did not give anythought that the new amp was bigger. when i test fit everything together the speaker box fit nice but the amp messured 12 3/4" so i had went and built another box. I still have the other box if you are interested in it. It does not have anycarpet on it, and the holes are set up for 12" speakers. Let me know what your email address is and I will send you some pics of the old one and the new one that is in the truck now. Also the dimentions that I used.
let me know if i can be anymore help

Message: also...
Does the length of the port make a differnece?
And, with a rear firing center console box... were would be the best places for the port (s)
Finally, 1 or 2 ports for one single 10" or 12" sub?

Message: i dont know much about ports and stuff like that but i do know that is you are going to make a ported box it is going to be bigger then a sealed box. ported boxes have to have more air. the box that i have is a sealed box. the width is 48" hight is 18" the boxes then selves are top is about 3" bottom is about 8" and the width is 18" and there is a space in the middle for the amp that is 12". what is your email address and i can send you a diagram and some pics. i do not want to take credit for the diagram. a friend of mine named drewsr/t made it up for me

Message: yea ive seen that diagram before.
So I dont need ports in my box?
Also,
do I have to have a speaker connector on the box? or can i just run the wires from the woofer out a small hole in the box right to the amp?

Message: I would STRONGLY suggest you consult the manufacture of the sub BEFORE building anything. A sub in the wrong box will sound like crap, some subs are built for ported boxes, whiles other are not. The size of the box is very important as well, taking someone else dimensions will get you nowhere unless your sub is the same.
As for wood use MDF, plywood is no good - then screw it together because nails will not work. You can buy plain black carpet at the Home Depot, that's what I did. Contact cement is used to hold the carpet to the box.

Message: JMII is right be sure to find out what your subs are made for!
As for having a 93 dak. Well all you have to do is take the measurements and put em down on paper! It isn't that hard really.
Definitely gotta use screws though!
