Subject: Matching up Speakers w/ Amp IP: Logged
Message: im in the market for putting a system in my truck... but how do you go about matching the amp with the speaker? rms to rms? peak to peak? im not buying cheap crap.. so im not gonna worry about power exagerations of cheap companies.
say the door speakers im looking at are 50 rms, do i look for an amp with 50 rms per channel, or a little above like 60, or 75?

Message: I think its always better to get a little more headroom on the amp. When you hear distortion, its not usually the speakers but the amp that is ditorting. So if you getting 50 wrms speakers then get an amp thats about 75-100 watts per channel.
Plus it leaves a little room for upgrade.
And another thing to rember is that a watt is a watt. Dont go out and get the bast amp out there. There's alot of less expencive brands out there that are good bang for the buck.
Example: if you are getting mids that are 50rms the i would go with something like the JBL P180.2. You gcan get tehm on ebay for about 100$.

Message: What leadbed said is mostly true... always give yourself a little extra room where possible. Ignore peak ratings they mean almost nothing and are often BS anyway. However a watt is not a watt per say... a watt with .1% distortion sounds 100X better than a watt with 10% distortion. Low distortion, higher S/N figures (above 95 atleast) and the ability to double it's rated power into lower ohms loads (@ 12V) are all signs of a good amp.

BTW I should have listen to my own advice, my current amp is underpowering my sub I think, I'm pretty sure I can hear when the amp clips the signal during complex musical demands :( or maybe I'm just pushing the gains & EQ too much ;)

And I have never seen an amp with 10% thd.
Im not tring to be a dick or anything, just my opinion...

Message: leadbedr - funny I've never seen anyone in competition using a Pyramid amp... and they put out like 1000 "watts".

Message: Im sure you and i both know just cause it says 1000 watts its not going to do it. Unless maybe you run 28 volts to it...
And ive seen a few people running full jensen and full pyramid systems for sq, just to prove a point, and they did sound damn good.

Sure it can. two things to remember: most amps have a DC-DC power supply inside that kicks the supply voltage up, and that dropping the load impedance will also get you more power at your speaker.

most aftermarket amps have no limiters, and can be run up to well past 10% THD. Actually they can be run up to square wave output (~33% THD).
Though you probably meant that nobody publishes ratings at 10%...

Message: don't just worry about power handling capability for your speakers. also look at the sensitivity rating in db. for instance, a speaker with a sensitivity rating of 89 will take twice as much power to produce the same volume as a speaker with a 92db rating. just something to consider.

Message: Keep in mind: watts = volts X current, so you can easily estimate an amps output by multiplying 12 (volts from the battery) X the fuse in the amp since it's limits the current. In other words: an amp with a 20A fuse can only do 240 watts regardless of what it claims, any more watts will blow the fuse. Amps that claim more are either full of crap OR basing thier numbers off 14.4 volts which is how much the alternator outputs, but it's very doubtfully the amp will actually recieve that full amount of power under normal conditions in a stock vehicle.
Like Jim Z said - when an amps clips (IE runs out power) the distortion goes thru the roof. This is how people blow expensive high-powered tweeters with just10 watts of power off a factory deck.
Jim Z - dropping the load impendance (ohms) might double the power, or it might toast the amp, especially a cheap one.
fyi - you can't really use the sensitivity rating that way because not all manufactures measure under the same conditions :( some use lower ohms, some use 1 meter mic distances, some use 1 foot mic distances - it's a mess... they do it on purpose to confuse people.

Message: Cant the fuse hold double its power for a burst?
Or something along those lines.
I know theres something else about fuses but cant remember.
When i had my 2 JBL 1200.1's in my truck i was only running a single 100 amp inline ANL fuse from the batt to my disto block with another 100 amp ANL.
On the amps it has 3 x 40 amp fuses. Those amps were tested by a couple different places and the put out over 1350 watts, so its good on the amp fuses but i only had enough fuse for 1200 watts. I was puhing closer to 2000 watts. And yes i had enough juice to keep the amp powered.
How does that one work?
Thats a little confusing, hope you can figure it out.
