Subject: Question about Amps IP: Logged
Message: Hey
I'm looking to buy a New Sony XM2150GSX amp... it is
760 Watts Max Power (into 2 ohms)
150 Watts x 2 into 4 Ohms
380 Watts x 1 into 4 Ohms
Now, Im not smart at all with car amps and stuff. Right now im my truck I have 2 8" with a dual ported box behind my seat and a Tribal 240 watt amp.. it was $19 off eBay new, lol.. I bought this just for a starter thing and i think its time to upgrade now. So I want to buy this amp so that I can turn the volume up a little bit with out it sounding like sh!t with the static and stuff. I have a 350 watt amp kit installed with my stuff right now and i could do the switch of the new amp myself since all it is is connecting the wires from one amp to the same input on the new amp.
So, now heres my question. What do I have to do to this new amp to get it set up to run the best with what I have right now... like how many watts to how many ohms? I want it loud and clean.
Thanks!

Message: How many ohms are your 8"s?
How are they wired?
Do you have the installation manual for the amp?
If so it should show you how to wire it for those configurations, but it all depends on your subs really. I'll need more info before I can tell ya how to hook it up.

Message: my subs right now are garbage... they are "Super Blue" brand. They are wired with 2 seperate wires coming in from my amp to 2 speaker connections on the sub box...
what i was really looking for was for someone to explain to me what the ohms and channels and everything meant

| RE: Question about Amps IP: Logged
Message: The channels are how many different "signals" you can send out. For example a 4 channel amp can send out 4 signals - normally this would be: front right speaker, front left speaker, rear right speaker, rear left speaker. However, you can do other things, my 4 channel is bridged so it's running front right, front left and a single sub all at the same time!
The ohms are just a measurement, in general terms the lower the number the amp can drive the better. An amp that can handle 2 ohms is better than one that can only handle 4 ohms. Speakers come in different ohms so you can wire them up to create different loads on the amps, it does not effect the quaility... just the number of speakers you can drive at a given power level. For example two 8 ohm speakers wired together (parallel) gives a 4 ohm load, so with your amp you could drive two 8 ohms subs with 380 watts (190 a sub) on one channel which is mono (not stereo which is left & right channels).
So... without knowing the ohms of your subs I can't tell you how to wire it up to get the most out of that amp, there are lots of possible combinations but only one will be the "best".
Sorry if this is confusing, but this is why people pay big bucks to have systems installed professional.

Message: Well my subs are 4ohms with 300 total watt each... so what would be the best way to hook this up then?
