Subject: Fiberglass Sub in QC IP: Logged
Message: Can a sub enclosure be all convoluted to get the min free area need or does it need to be realativly one big space? In other words, could it be free forming to go under both seats and say thru a center console? Just thinking out of the box. No pun intended....

Message: Air space is air space... so yes it could be a weird shape and still work. Now if it's a ported box you might have some problems. The other issue would be it's strenght in certain areas if it was free-formed and odd shaped.

Message: This would be really goofy and just use all the small spaces that aren't being used for anything usefull. ie, between the seats and the console, under the seats, between the seats and the side pillars, ect....

Message: I think you guys are missing the point. I don't think "air space is air space". Look at it this way. Do you think your sub would sound as good blasting through a straw that was a mile long, but still was the correct air space. The dimensions of the box are important, as well as the air space, if you are trying to get the speaker to resonate properly.

Message: it's absolutley all about the dimensions. there is a reason why live music sounds better in an auditorium compared to a gymnasium. Listen to one of those BOSE radio things that are like 3000 bucks, and you'll understand what i'm saying

Message: jeremy - that is the acoustics of the enviroment your talking about.
And those Bose speakers your talking about are ported enclosures. As I said before I would not attempted an oddly shapped ported enclosure, weird stuff happens with ported boxes depending on the location of the port itself.
TonyC - your right, but I assumed he was not building straw shapped box ;) just an oddly formed one to fit around some stuff.

Message: Sry for not logging in but i read this post and i have to put in my 2 cents. air space IS air space. It doesn't matter what it is spded like. the reason a certian amout of air space is needed is for compression(for lack of a better term)that is why too much air space the sub plays lower and has less power handling. the reason this happens is becuase the sub will be "looser" with less "vacuum" in the box. Less vacuum mean over excursion and more SPL, at the cost of less power handling. No matter how the box is shaped 1cu. is 1cu. Now if it's a ported Box the same rule applies, but you may get weird or loud port noise as a result if the port and the speaker are on the sides of a small part in a box. Just remember the smallest space in the box can't be smaller that the port dimensions. I know a little about this, I'm a stereo freak :). Check out my RT at http://www.sounddomain.com/memberpage/431337 I've dabbled alittle bit with car audio :)
