Subject: Why is batt. going dead? IP: Logged
Message: I have 2003 Dakota with factory audio steering wheel controls, I replaced the factory head unit with Alpine #9813, replaced Infinity speakers with Focal componets (4),took out Infinity amp and by-passed speaker wires where amp was, there are 6 wires left where amp was, looks like 2 grnds.,2 hot wires (purple),2 I don't know, I put caps on these 6. At HU I used a plug/harness where I connected the 8 speaker wires,12V constant power,12V switched power, illumination, hooked grnd. up thru this plug. Radio and speakers work great, no display on HU when key is off. If I leave car in garage when I come home from work batt. will not turn engine over. Could unused audio controls in steering wheel be causing a problem? Could unused wires where Infinity amp was be the problem? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, emka.

Message: emka, have you checked the power wire and the accesory wire on the head unit? Kinda sounds like you might have those two backwards. If you have those two switched, then the HU would only come one when the key is on, and when the key is off, only the accesory wire would have power, and the power wire would not, therefore the HU would not come on. That might be whats draining your battery too, since you don't have any other stereo components that would draw a lot of current. Hope you figure it out.

Message: 02cc4.7, thanks for reply. I think I have those 2 wires correct, yellow to yellow=constant power(I think to keep your settings and the time),red to red=switched power,HU will come on when key on accessory or truck started.
