Subject: 4 ohm or 8 ohm ?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I am new to audio systems. I am thinking of putting JL Audio 6wo subs in the stock rear locations (2003 dak. cc.). They offer 4 ohm and 8 ohm speakers, what determines which one you need? I have the factory Infinity head unit and was going to see what it sounded like with this head unit, or should I just go ahead and put in an amp to power everything?

It depends on what the amplifier can handle, and how you plan on wiring them. All car amplifiers generally available can handle 4 ohms, most can handle 2 ohms.

"I have the factory Infinity head unit and was going to see what it sounded like with this head unit,"

I'd strongly advise against that for three reasons:

1) the factory Infinity amp is only about 30 watts per channel into 2 ohms. That means it'll only be pushing about 15 watts into the JLs. Not enough for a woofer.

2) the rear channels of the amplifier are full-range. The JL is a woofer, and it does not play midrage frequencies well. Woofers need a low-pass filter at about 100 Hz to soud best.

3) The JLs require an enclosure, just mounting them in your truck's side panel won't work. You'd risk damaging the woofer.

"or should I just go ahead and put in an amp to power everything?"

You'll at least want to have a subwoofer amp powering the JLs.

Jim Z, Thanks for the advice! Looks like I need to think about this system some more. Sounds like I should scrap the Infinity system altogether and start over. I don't play the music all that loud but would like more clarity and a little more bass than the stock Infinity is producing. Any more advice would be appreciated. Thanks, emka.

That's what I'm going to do. I hate the Infinity system.

If you want a "real" system... yes you have to "start" over. New head unit, amp, seperates in the front doors and some subs in a box in the back. You can keep it basic but the factory crap is just that... crap.

JMII, thanks for the reply, very nice system you have there, gives me some good ideas to think about how to configure mine. I have bought a Alpine #9813 head unit and am trying to decide on speakers and possibly an amp. Also bought a book from Crutchfield on system design and wiring. Thanks, emka.

I don't have the Infinity, but if you replace the head unit in one, would you have to replace or redo the wiring to the speakers? I believe the Infinity unit sends the signal to the infinity amp, then the amp to the speakers. Be sure to look into that.
