Subject: 1993 dodge dakota radio problem IP: Logged
Message: The stock radio turns off intermittently. It
comes back on when I turn the power switch off
and on. Sometimes I have to turn the power off
and on several times. Sometimes it just won't
come on at all. Then sometimes the next time I
drive it the radio works again. The clock part
still works, but the radio just won't turn on
sometimes. It seems to be affected by the
temperature/weather. Sometimes it always works,
then later it intermittently turns off the radio.
I thought about trying to take it out and look at
it, maybe clean the switch, but it looks terribly
difficult to remove.
It seems that whenever something goes wrong with
my truck, it has happened to many other people
who have the same truck. Has this happened to
anyone else out there?
Can someone explain hot to remove the radio?
Anyone know how to fix this?
I love my truck.

Message: WOW! I came to this site looking for an answer to this same question. I am having the exact problems with my 2001 Dakota. The radio started going bad about 2 weeks ago and it comes and goes intermittantly. I have already replaced the factory deck with a nice Kenwood Excelon KDC-XC579. But this HAS NOT fixed the problem gentlemen. I hooked up the entire new unit and followed the wiring diagram exactly how it is laid out. I double and triple checked the wiring hookup. I have full functionality of the head unit, but no sound at all. I am thinking at this point that it may be the factory amp that is going bad. But I'm open to suggestions for possible solutions here. I'd like to take a fairly non-expensive approach to solving this problem. I've already dumped $250 into it and it isn't fixed. So, if anyone can hook me up with a website that has used amps for a 2001 Dakota, let me know. I'd appreciate it.
Sincerely,

Message: From the sounds of it I’m guessing that you have the Infinity system. Sounds like the factory radio was going bad. You said that you have full functionality with no sound after you changed the head unit. First did this fix the problem with the radio coming and going. I’m guessing from how you stated everything, it did, but now there isn’t any sound at all. I’m sure you did but make sure you hooked up the external amp turn on wire. I had this same problem (no sound) until I connected it up. Your head unit still needs to tell the amp when to turn on. Just my $0.02

Message: DJ,
You're $.02 count bro! I have since resolved the problem that you were so kind to reply to here. As it turns out, you are correct in saying that I did not have the external amp turn on wire hooked up correctly. I hooked the wrong wire up to the power antenna wire (blue) on the wiring harness. I had the blue wire on my new deck which was only the power antenna hooked up, when I should have had the blue wire with the white stripe (amp feed I think) hooked to it instead. So all is well and I appreciate the help.
I have to say that this is one of the best websites I have ever participated in. The willingness to help each other in this community is amazing. Keep up the energy and positive vibe. Dakotas Rock!!!

Message: Im on my 2nd factory radio. Both have quit in the same way. First they would intermittantly lose complete power and come back on, almost like a thermal switch was kicking on and off. Then it quit all together, no power to the radio at all. I have a radio with cd player built in. Is it the radio going bad or a power spike, im at a loss here I don't want to buy another radio. Is the amp separate from the radio and could this be the problem.

Message: Hey Ken,
A couple of things.......
I suggest that you scrap the idea of running a factory head unit in your Dakota. I wound up replacing mine and after some minor wiring snafu's, it has been running smooth ever since. As far as ripping out your old deck, visit the website that I posted below for a full step by step process of how to get your old deck out. This website charges you a couple of bucks for the plans, but it is well worth it and very easy to follow. I did it and it was a sinch. Good luck to you!

Message: Hey. I'm a tech at a GM dealer, and have a '00 Dakota here with a radio problem. Not sure how it behaved before, but as of now it won't even turn on, or so much as show a clock display. Pulled the unit from the dash, and the gray terminal was unpluged. Pluged it back up and the heat sink on the side started getting hot in a hurry... It would really help to have a wiring diagram. Anyone know where to find one?

Message: That's correct Kyle. As I stated in a previous post above, there are plans available on the Internet that you can purchase for a couple of bucks....well worth the money if you ask me. The plans will take you through the whole process screw by screw so you don't (no pun intended) screw up your dash. I've posted the website link below. Good luck!
