Subject: I want to upgrade IP: Logged
Message: I have a 02 club cab and would like to get better sound. I upgraded the stereo and speakers but I am not happy with the bass. I would like to add a sub and keep the original speakers, is this a good idea? I am a little strapped for cash right now. Would I have to get an amp?
Thanks for the help!

Message: If you want bass (more than factory) you need an amp and a sub for sure. Might look into those Bazooka tubes w/amp combos or a Thunderform w/amp since those are an all-in-one solution that is cheap and easy to install.
No radio by itself will ever put out enough power to produce any worthwhile bass regardless of those crazy numbers they put on the radio. Some claim to be like 45 watts - that's a joke, any radio that fits in your dash is going to be about 15 watts tops!
You could always upgrade the other speakers later, add a crossover and another amp and be all set. Might look into getting a 4 channel amp with built-in crossover since (once again) that would kill two birds with one stone and save money in the long run.

Message: be weary of the 4 channel amp with built in crossover. it has been a couple of years so they may have changed but the 2 that I have owned both use to overheat and shut off. Too much stuff in a small space I guess. may not still be a problem though..

Message: JJ02QC - never had a problem with any of the 4 channels w/crossover I've run going back about 10 years! ...of course I've always run HiFonics and they are bullet proof anyway :)
