Subject: Kicker 10" L5 or L7 in a Regular Cab IP: Logged
Message: http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-m6yxflzalKF/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=10&g=510&I=2062TS10L7&o=m&a=1&cc=01&avf=Y
that is the sub/box combo im looking at (gonna get 2 of them), either the L7 or L5 in it, depending on $$...i did some measuring and it will fit but im not sure about how far i can move my seat back. Does anyone have this setup in their regular cab dakota? Or does anyone have kicker square subs in their regular cab dakota and where did they get the box for them?
please dont tell me to make my own box...because im not that great with wood and i dont want to be bothered with it. My time usually all goes into the quad and i dont want to try to make a box. I can install a system but i dont want any of this custom b/s that might not work correctly.
also, the L7 puts out 600W continuous...2 of those that makes 1200W of subwoofer. For a regular cab dakota is that going to be way too much? I want it to be loud but i dont want my truck rattling apart and i dont want to have to dynamat the whole interior. Also can the stock V6 battery/alternator power the amp to power these beasts?
As you can see im new to system's (but not new to working on things myself) so any advice/personal experience you can give me would be great, thanks a lot!

Message: If you go with the L7's you should definantly give them at least 500 watts to each or they wont perform very good. I think 2 L5's should be quite enough bass for a regular cab. You should be ok with the box size, you might even want to consider to 8" L7's. They would save lots of room and still pound really hard. Just my thoughts.

Message: wow i never thought of that...that would cut down the box size by a lot...and 450W continuous would be the same as 2 10" L5's....what would the difference be even though its the same watt sub?
^^^Also still some help on my questions above please^^^

Message: you should be able to get away with the stock altenator to run an amp. I've seen an L7 with only like 300 watts running it and it was hitting 137 so they don't really need all too much power. I've never seen a sub in this world that needed more than half it's RMS power to perform properly. In my opinion 2 of them will be way too much for a regular cab. I used to just use one 10" hollywood in my old Ranger and I was doing 135 without even driving the sub to it's limit. And just a word of advice, Dynomat is worth it even if you don't have any rattles. But go with something cheaper like B-Quiet.... or make your own with the thickest tar paper you can find and some rubberized undercoating (only recommended if you are going to let your truck sit with no interior for a few days)

Message: 2 8" L7's would probably hit just as hard as 2 10" L5's and sound just as good to for what you need. I would recomend to of them (you should run 300 watts rms to each of em and they should pound pretty good).

Message: Yea the 8" L7 seems to me to be the way to go...if only kicker made a box for it like they do for the 10" (the link i showed above). I emailed them asking if they did or could...and the guy told me to get the vented 8"L7 box...which is about 10" deep....NO WAY WOULD THAT FIT...he musnt know dakota regular cabs at all. The 10" L5's would fit in that box...but it will be tight and the seat's movement might be impaired by an inch or two. The 8" is ideal...anyone know where someone sells the truck box for this little thumper?
I wont have a problem with the undercoating or w/e to keep vibration ect down....my dad runs an auto body shop so he can help me out.

Message: Oh yeah I forgot you could also get 2 regular truck boxes and cut the cirle into a square. I did that for 2 10" L7's and it worked great! They give you a stencil in the subwoofer box so you can cut the square easily.

Message: Two 8" L5s would be more than enough for you I'd guess. Just find any small wedge shaped truck box with the right air space (.33 <> .75 cu ft) and cut out the squares. If you want slightly more volume (louder) go with smaller box, if you want deeper bass go with the bigger box. Send between 200 and 300 watts to each sub and enjoy the ride.
The L7s are for people looking to push the limits and that's why they have such high power ratings. Those ported boxes Kicker recommends will be louder but the trade off is size (bigger = no leg room) and do not hit as deep or as smooth.
You will not need to beef up your stock electrical system - your only taking about a 400 to 600 watt system here, just use the correct wire guage (4) and good gold heavy duty connectors.
As for Dynamat one advantage most people overlook is that the truck itself will be quiter - thus even at low volumes your system will sound louder. It's like having a bigger amp but cheaper! Plus with the windows up you can jam without fear of getting too much attention from the cops or your local gang of thugs looking to jack your stuff :(

Message: The 8" L7 is rated at 450W max RMS and its like 1000 peak. So i think id go with a 2 channel amp that pushes 400W to each channel. Plus, id have a separate amp for my speakers...im looking at 90W RMS each for the front 6 3/4 and then 55W RMS each for the back 5 1/4, i dont think a head unit can supply that much juice. I also found a truck box with .55 cu ft of space with an 8" round hole...that could easily be cut to square like a previous post said...so im looking more into those, because i dont really need 10" subs for a reg cab truck, thats asking for the cops to follow me everywhere, not that these 8" L7's will make it much quieter...but i think i can manage!
Profile amps? They are really cheap, WHY! are they asking you to buy them so they can rip u off when the amp breaks a week later? I mean power is power but i dont understand why these amps are so much cheaper than everyone else.

Message: Matt - RE: Profile amps - power is NOT power! Unlike HP which the governement has regulations on, watts are just a made up number they stick on the amp. Those Profile amps will never reach hit those numbers under real world conditions. The top-end amp companys either under-rate or use the true wattage on their amps. Check out some magazines that test amps and you'll see how the claimed wattage varies (often greatly) from the true measured output watts. Their are other factors like distortion and signal-to-noise ratio to consider as well... you get what you pay for in this industry.
If you going to spend the $$$ on the L7s you'd be pushing them with some serious power or you'll just wasting the money on the speakers. This is why I recommended the L5s as they do not require (or need) as much power, thus you can get a BETTER (but smaller) amp. It's a better solution for you I think since your not enter any competitions or building some high-end system. The L5s with around 200-300 watts will be plenty to rock your regular cab trust me - or go give a listen a simlar set-up somewhere.

Message: hey you know with the whole space situation on the L7 8s or going bigger there is a reason why they made the CVXs they are more for your most common applications to use less room so you could get 2 CVX 8s or even 2 CVX 10s and and you wouldn't have to go through the trouble of cutting a box
