Subject: 4-8's verses 2 10's. IP: Logged
Message: simple question was just wondering if 4 eights would be a better set up then 2 10's. in terms of which would be louder. I think it would be easier to build an enclosure for 4 eights. and I hardley ever see this setup done.
also what would hit harder.

Message: I have heard that more of the smaller size subs can sound just as good if not better,to put it in lammens terms the bigger size hits lower bass but if more smaller subs are added they could make up for this.I'm not saying that the 4 8" would be better, but i think they might be louder.I'm sure theres lots of people here that could help you out.

Message: I've always heard more subs are louder. larger subs have more surface area however? I'm just curios my self. I'm almost considering buying a t-form.

Message: well...lets do the math... 4x8"=32" of subwoofer pushing air.....2x10"=20" of subwoofer pushing air. Im no speaker genious but i would think that the 4 8" would be louder?!? But then there are watts to consider and everything, if the 4 8's combined have more watts than the 2 10's.......

Message: 4 8" subs would be louder but and they would provide tighter bass than 10's but your not gonna get as nearly much low bass as 10's would provide. If you listen to rap then go with 10's. Either way is good, just depends on your preference.

Message: sorry matt, your math is wrong. you have to take surface area, and for the 8's that would be 201 sq. inches. the 10's would be 157. so yes the 8's would be a little louder, but barely. MAYBE 1 db, based on cone area. Basically, this all comes down to install. which, what else is new?

Message: oh, I forgot to factor in Xmax, too. depending on the brand/model. the 8's will probably have less Xmax, which leads to less air being moved. so basically, they could be about equal. I'd go with the 10's, unless you get the Elemental designs E8A's. but then you could get a couple E10A's too.

Message: I have had both, 2 10's and 4 8's. I preferred the 8's in a RC and the 10's in a CC. The 8's just don't go low enough even with 4 of them when the air space inside the truck gets larger. Of course this all assumes equal quality among speakers.

Message: purple99dak said it the best - use four 8"s if you want loudness and a tight bass sound or two 10"s if you want deeper bass. Personally I had a system with four 10"s and it crushed most peoples two speakers - weather they were 12" OR 15". Of course as noted... installtion is a major factor along with amplifer power. But if it was me I'd use the four 8"s.
