Subject: Difference between boxes?

Message:
Well I would just like to know if there is a big difference between a ported box and an enclosed box, also does the type of port matter eg. round port vs slotted?
Thanks.

the main difference with a ported box compaired to a sealed box is that it requires less air space to play low frequencies. Although after the tuned frequency of a ported box the roll off is rapid and "flappage" occurs. Sorry for the word "flappage" it's one that a professor of mine used to use when discussing box design. It basically means the point at where the speaker is just trying to throw itself out of the basket. Port shape does not really make any difference in sound. To get low frequencies that a well tuned ported box will produce the sealed box would have to be huge and then the power handling is decreased. Oh that is one other difference a ported box requires less power to reach high SPL levels because less acoustic loading takes place

I agree with all aspects of that reply. except port shape. port shape has a lot to do with the sound of a box. round ports are easier to build but as a general rule a rectangle or square port has alot less port noise. you can get a round port to were it has little port noise but you need to use an oversized port. or have no rough edges on the port.
