Subject: my (2) 12"s progress IP: Logged
Message: i made a post about a while ago about fitting (2) 12"s (with a pretty big magnet and mounting depth, and keeping the seat fully functional on the hinges) under the rear seat of my club cab. the subs i am using as a guide are Rockford Punch DVCs. before putting the top on i am going to go to the local audio store and try a few different subs in the box to see what fits.
i raised the mounting brackets for the seat 1.75" by making custom brackets. i built the 3/4" MDF frame and did the first layer of fiberglass on the bottom. i am still high right now from the resin, and i need to let it dry, then i will add a few more layers.
anyways, check this out for a few pics

Message: well, i took the box outta the truck this morning.
the first layer of fiberglass is lookin good. i still have a few more to do. i took a measurement and right now i have a little over 8" of mounting depth. after a few more layers it should be around 7.6" at the max......my estimate on volume is about 1.5ft^3. i will line it with a garbage bag and fill it with water to find my exact volume, when its totally fiberglassed
hmmmm.....7.6" of mounting depth and 1.5ft^3 should be perfect for 2 Kicker 12L7s :)

Message: kovzr6 deffinately post pics when done and if its not to much trouble take lots of measurements as I'd like to try the same thing only I want 2.00ft3 a side so I can run my extants ported. did you cut out the side cup holders? I might be able to make up the needed aire space by includeing the enclosure to there.
as much info as you can give me is helpful as I was going to try this once but couldn't figure out how I was going to mount it up and get it to work. even cut the plastic section out in the back of the truck and all.

Message: conig,
i took the tool tray right out. there is a few inches in each side to play with. BUT if you build right against the wall, the box will not go in the truck easily. you will have to remove all the side panels, put the box in, then put the panels back on. i took the panels off, took out the tool tray, put the panels back on. my box can go in the truck (with the help of another person) with the side panels on. i will also be bolting it down.
ill take measurements when im done the fiberglass work and ill take some better pics of each side.
2ft^3 is going to be a bit bigger than mine. and mine is right on the limit for using the hinges for the seats. if you want 2ft^3 you are going to have to take the seat off the hinges and let them rest freely ontop of the box when you want to hide the subs.

Message: understand its an estamite. I had my 12's in a sealed box before I was skeptical about going ported from past experienses but now that I have tried a square port and have gotten used to haveing my subs beat almost twice as hard I don't want to go back. thats one of the problems with these trucks you have to trade practicality for sq or vice versa.
I don't mind removeing the seats from the factory bracket a bit. one thing of consern however Is I tried setting a box I had eight inches deep in the back and I'm not tall but my head was on the roof. let me know if you have a similar problem.

I took measurements of 49*8*13/1728 and got 2.94 for volume and it will be smaller with fiberglass work. really would like some measurements now. lol.

the front piece is 7.25" high X 15" X 50"
but the back piece is 4.25"
the top is sloping towards the back of the truck.
i just finished the 2nd layer of fiberglass tonight. im going to do 3 or 4 more. so by the weekend the fiberglassing will be complete. i will use water and measuring cup to fill it. it will give me my exact volume. heck, its the only accurate was to find it.
ill post the volume in here on saturday or sunday

Looking good, very similar to the one i made, based on Anthonys original plans, for BW1199.. see it at
BW's Sound System
We did several layers of glass, started with 3 lb mat 2 layers, then 3 layers of 1/4" woven, covered by another layers of peices of woven in corner areas.. Its got (4) 10" Kickers and seems to be holding up very well..
Its real close in size, we're 48x16.5x7.5, if you have a Dak youre gonna have to do some cutting in the rear side panels to get it back together.

Message: WHAT DO I DO???????
i have a decision to make. i really want to use 2 kicker 12L7s. so i went to the local store and dropped a 12L7 in and tried to put the seat down on it. its not working. the L7s stick up just a little over 3/4". i was only planning on them sticking up about 3/8". stupid me.
so should i take the seats OFF the hinges and let them just rest there, or should i go with different subs??? i was planning on having the seats on the hinges, but i really want the L7s

Message: personally I would go with different subs but thats just me. I don't like L7's. one thing to keep in mind is I'm not tall but I put a big dictionary on my back seat to try and simulate the height of about 9 inches. eight for box includeing seat and my head was on the roof. and I'm not that tall.
there should be no problems with the seats just sittong on top just secure them with velcrow or something so they don't slide around.

Message: well,
i am going to throw my Punch DVCs back in the original box. it has about the same volume as the box im building. if they slam in the truck, i might keep them. but they are old. (my reason for wanting new ones)
what other 12" 4ohm DVC subs are out there that will slam with 1100 Wrms thrown at them?

Message: my friggin amp isnt in..... so i dont know how it sounds yet :(
i called the shop and they said it should be in by the end of the week.
the box i had them in before had a little bit bigger volume. but both subs were in one chamber. and they were powered by a Kenwood Excelon X401M. it was 1200W max at 2 ohm, but they were wired at 4 ohm, so they were probably only getting 800W max. i hit 140.1db legal with them in my cougar.
they will now be pushed by a Memphis ST1000D (when it comes in). they are wired at 1 ohm. so they should be getting a little under 1100Wrms if my voltage is good. and each sub has its own chamber. and its in a truck, not a big a$$ car. i would be happy with hitting the same as my car, 140db

Message: REAL nice install on the subs!!
I have a 01 C/C Sport and the same predicament: No space!! I have a set of Diamond Audio M3 12's in a 4 ft3 ported enclosure that takes up my whole back seat.
Im gonna use your idea for a ported set of mean 10's, maybe 12's if I can find some that work in a small enough enclosure and still handle RAW power. An MTX 81000D will handle the low end of my sounds from then on (1500w RMS class D monoblock).
I have an idea to build a custom upholstered panel to cover the 12's and still let em breathe when noone's sitting there, (hardly ever), that you can take out.
I'm just thinking about what material you can put across the hole for the 12 and still support weight and let air flow. I think the patio furniture type wire mesh (Really strong) would do it with a nice carpet to conceal it and upholster the padding and some little 12" circular pads to go on top of the wire grills IF someone needs to sit there.
I think it's a great idea.
Anyway, I like the fiberglass install.
