Subject: question for the experts IP: Logged
Message: I have a '99 CC Dakota. I removed my back seat, and I want to build a custom system. I really don't know what to get, and my knowledge in audio equipment is around nothing! What should I get??? Starting with the CD player, what kind of box, subs, mids, highs, amps, etc.???? I herd people talking about getting a custom made box that will hold 4 12"s. Is that the way to go? Also someone told me to get Audiobahn Flame Q subs, should I get those? What audio components, brand, size and model should I get? Any one please email me at vball005@yahoo.com or reply with any suggestions that would be helpful. Thanks, Jacob

Start with the CD player, the rest of your system will only sound as good as the signal it produces. Here are a few features that I would suggest:
1. Time correction: a car is a very hard place to get good stereo imaging, but this makes a big difference. Several companies have this, my Alpine 7894 has it and it is great.
2. Built in crossovers, the steeper the slope the better (24dB is better than 12dB). That way you won't have to rely on an amp's crossover. Easier to adjust the CD players settings.
3. Built-in EQ. You can fine tune your music more than just turning up/down the bass and treble.
4. I like the option of MP3's.....it's a personal choice.
5. 3 sets of pre-outs(front,rear,sub) with subwoofer volume control. More than 2 volt is nice. If you plan on using amps, they are a must. The sub volume is nice because can adjust the bass for certain songs.
As for speakers, 6.5" components are the way to go and if you get decent ones and amp them, they will be plently loud. Thus there is no need for rear speakers, which will only degrade SQ and imaging. For example if you had 6.5" Focal or CDT components (I have Focal and have heard great things about CDT) in the front and some average coaxial 6.5" in the back they wouldn't sound as nice as the front set and would ruin the imaging. If you like metal tweets, the Focals are VERY detailed and have great midbass. The CDT's have silk dome's which are a bit more tame. My point...screw the rear speakers.
Empty thunderforms can be bought, and you can then pic out the subs that you would like as long as they aren't too deep. If you want some small box 8" that would really pound, look into the elemental designs ed8a. 16mm xmax and very low response all from an 8" speaker in a 0.25ft^3 box!
I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions,
Nate

Message: Step #1 - determine budget!
Step #2 - stop listening to people and start listening to speakers themselves to determine what you like.
Step #3 - take knowledge from Step 2 and apply budget from Step 1
