Subject: Alpine CDA-7998 vs Pioneer DEH-P940M IP: Logged
Message: I've narrowed down my choices to for an HU to the Alpine CDA-7998 and the Pioneer DEH-P940M. One of my requirements is to be able to QUICKLY and EASILY change the tone on the unit. i.e. boost the treble for one song then maybe add a little mid-range for another. During my trip to a dealer to audition each, with no help from a salesperson, I found changing the equalizer on either unit to be cumbersome. On the Pioneer it takes a series of "soft menu" choices then I must navigate the equalizer with the cursor
controller on the far right hand side of the unit. This will be a stretch for me in my truck. On the Alpine, while the controls for this function are located on the left side of the unit, I still have to HOLD down the EQ
button for several seconds then make my adjustments using several different
buttons. If I want to hear it a little louder then say, add a little more treble, I must do it all over again.
I know this sounds trivial but I'm constantly screwing around with the bass and treble on my current unit with ease and don't want to lose that capability.
Does anyone know of an easier way to access the EQ on either unit?
Also, I'll be installing JL's Stealthbox and was wondering if someone could recommend a good dealer. I don't want to pay list price.
Thanks for your help,
Brett

Message: With the older Dak's (non-rounded radio hole), you could mount a DIN receiver in the top part and a 1/2 DIN equalizer in the lower part of the openning. That would allow you to easily play with the sound to your heart's content. That option may be gone with the newer round faced radio hole. The only other idea is to mount one of those 1/2 DIN equalizers somewhere easy to access under the dash.

Message: Thanks, the equalizer idea is a good one and I'd love to put a .5 din unit on top or bottom of my head unit. Now that raises two more questions;
1) Is my dash opening compatible (2000 Dakota Club)?
2) Will the EQ affect the "Time Alignment" or other advanced features of either unit?

Message: My guess is you are SOL as the 00 Dak has the rounded face on the radio. I think that means there is not enough room for the DIN receiver AND the 1/2 DIN equalizer (I may be wrong, you might contact Crutchfield and ask). I HAD (note past tense) a 95 Dak with the 1.5 DIN radio hole and Crutchfield had an adaptor that would allow a DIN receiver plus a 1/2 equalizer. Now with my 03, I have the rounded hole and almost nothing will fit (other than one DIN receiver). Now maybe there are some REAL THIN or small equalizers that might still fit (again, contact Crutchfield). If so, you will need to research the equalizers to see how they interact with your head unit. There are SO many variables...

Message: Brett, I think you may be refering to the Premier 940MP, if not your refering to the Pioneer 9400MP, either way this would be my pick. Most Pioneer/Pioneer Premier units have an "Easy EQ" that have DSP modes like Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Flat and a couple Custom modes you can program. These fields can be cycled through using one button one the reciever.
The Alpine has no internal amplification, and doesn't support video if you'd wanna go that route in the future.
