Subject: Mounting Farad Cap.....erg IP: Logged
Message: Quick question... Im installed a thunderform in my dak this weekend hopefully, got the box here, the amp will be here friday, (JL 500/1) Just went out and bought all the wires.. damn expensive.. But, I was thinking about a capacitor. 500 watts is kind of alot, and would prefer to safegaurd and throw a 1 cap in. But, my question is........ Looking at the thunderform, there is the hole where the jacks suppost to mount, I was thinking about mounting the cap in there, but my question is.. how much distance between the amp, and the cap can I have? I plan on throwing the amp under the passanger seat.
So id make the run from the battery, to the cap located in the thunderform, and then make a 4-6 foot run of wire back to the amp.
Is this possable at all? Without losing too much current or whatnot.
Any information would be much appreciated because I attempt to do all this.
Also, while im here, anyone know of a good hole to run the wire through the firewall into the cab. Running 4 gauge, so its kinda big. That would be cool to know too!
Thanks for the help!

Message: I got the same amp your getting, great amp works great and hits and wise to use a farad cap.
I think the reson to use a Farad Cap is to give your amp a better place to draw power/curents when it's trying to draw power under high demans. So it keeps the bass hiting hard all the time not just on the first note. I would think it's best to keep the wire short as you can between the cap and amp but with 4 gauge will keep the power flowing.

Message: Just took a look at your pictures.. never even thought to set it right behind the amp. The back seats so small, no one sits back there anyhow, but I wanted to keep things as low key as possable. I guess im going to have wait till I have EVERYTHING in my hands, and the inside of my truck taken apart before I acctually decide where to put things. Once im inside the cab, it's not going to be a problem, I just wanna keep the line from the batter clean and find a good easy place to come through the firewall.
Thanks for the info!

Message: As far as a place to run the 4 guage through the firewall, there is a hole on the passenger's side that has a rubber knock out. It wasn't a problem to run 4 guage through with a grommet. I am not sure if you can really go any larger, but it was almost made for 4 guage. Perfect fit. I just install everything in my truck yesterday.

Message: Don't get a cap. That'll solve your issue pretty easily.
Spend your money on a new battery instead (after you have it all hooked up and think you really need it), or upgrade your wiring from alt to ground and batt., and from battery to ground.
Batteries store something like 2,000,000 farads. compare that to your 1 farad cap. Get a battery with as high of a CCA rating as possible. Something over 7-800 will work great. Red tops are good as well.

Message: I was thinking about getting an Optima Red sometime in the near future. Due to weather conditions, It doesnt look like I will be able to install the system this weekend, so that will give me another week to buy more stuff :)
Ill have to check for that hole in the firewall and pick up a gromet. I was browsing my factory service manual last night but couldnt find anything good on the firewall. But thanks for the info!

Message: '98 Dak, ran the 4ga through the same hole as the auto-shifter cable, near the steering column.. no problems.
The wire from the cap to the amp should be as short possible. The shorter the distance to the battery is also best. How about mounting the cap under the pass seat or in the console if you have one.

Message: Got home from work tonight, and sat down at my desk, and things started popping into my head. Awsome install going to happen. Just designed an awsome mount for the amp and cap, as well as a switch for power. (should work wired into the remote turn on right?) Once its build, i'll have some pictures.. gunna be sweet!
