Subject: Stock Infinity Speakers question IP: Logged
Message: I recently installed an alpine 7897 in my 2001 dodge dakota quad cab with the infinity stereo. On the alpine you can customize the sound output for each speaker individually, i.e. crossover, bass focus, time delay, ect. Currently I am dissapointed with the performance of the stereo. Can anybody give me some advice on how the stereo should be configured. The most dissapointing thing is the bass doesn't seem to be as loud as it was with my factory head unit. Have I done something wrong in the install or is the stereo just a POS?

Message: did a little more research on this page and I think that I need to bypass the amplifier in the door. If anybody has info on this or instructions on how to do that please drop me a line. Thanks

Message: Here is what I found, same problem, new head unit overdrives the existing chrysler/infinity amplifier and caused distortion:
98 Dakota CC, with Premium audio system. Chry/Infinity tweeters in the doors panel, 2 6.75" mids in the lower door, and 6.75" 2 way speakers in the rear cab pilars.
The external Infinity amplifier is mounted behind the passenger side kick panel. There are 2 bolts plus a U-shaped barcket holding it in place.
The amplifier has (2) connector's. In this text they are labeled C1 which is the 14 pin connector, and C2 which is the 10 pin connector, as they are labeled in the dodge service manual drawings. Right is the passenger side of the Dakota.
Connections at the amplifier:
C1 (Amplifier Power, Ground, and Outputs to the Speakers):
C1-1 DG/WT <--- Fuse Panel - C6-3 Fuse 4, 15A
C1-2 DG/WT <--- Fuse Panel - C6-3 Fuse 4, 15A
C1-3 No Connection
C1-4 LG/VT ---> Left Front +
C1-5 TN/VT ---> Right Rear +
C1-6 WT/RD ---> Left Rear +
C1-7 <---> Ground
C1-8 <---> Ground
C1-9 No Connection
C1-10 LB/DG ---> Right Front --
C1-11 LB/RD ---> Right Front +

C2-6 VT <--- Right Front +
C2-7 BR/YL <--- Left Rear +
C2-8 BR/LB <--- Left Rear --
C2-9 DB/WT <--- Right Rear +

Message: The four speakers in the front of the truck run off the FL and FR channels and then the four in back run of the same RR LR channels.

Message: The factory amp has 4 outputs RF+-, LF+-, RR+-, LR+-.. each chanel has 2 wires.
Doors, each has 2 wires come from the amp, which somewhere between the amp and the door become 4 wires, one set go to the mid-spkr connectors and one set to the tweeter with a capacitor (functioning as a high pass filter) on the tweeter connectors.
Rear Pillars, each has 2 wires from the amp, that connect to the speaker connectors, the tweeter is connected internal in the speaker with a capacitor connected as a high pass filter..

Message: ok so 2 speakers off each channel.
but doesnt that affect the ohm rating? is it enough for an aftermarket deck to handle if the ohms drop lower?

Message: ko, it won't because factory speakers use high impedences, usually 8-10 ohms. not 4 like your average aftermarket stuff.
