Subject: Do I need crossovers??
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been looking into swapping out the stock speakers in my '00/RC. I am also probably going to add some onto the console and upper door panels. My question is, what is the advantage of all these "component kits" with the little crossover boxes, and do they make all that much of a noticable difference? I am not putting any subs in there, but I probably will have at least 8 or 10 speakers or so...any help is appreciated.

No Subs? Why Not? You just will not ever be happy if you don't at least look at say the small 6.5 subs that can be installed in the rear doors or back panel (whichever you have). As for Components, oh Yeah they make all the difference in the world. Without them, your mids and highs are all mixed together. The crossover allows only the high freq's to the tweeters, and the mids and lower to the mains.

But I would still look at adding a sub.

Components will do you much better because the stock speaker location in the Daks sucks; all the sound is being directed strait at your legs. A GOOD set of component speakers usually has better grade speakers than even your better coaxials. By mounting the tweets up high like the sail pannels or the A-pillars or something, you'll pull that soundstage up a little higher, thus putting the sound more in front of you. I have Rockford Fosgate Fanatic Q (RF's Top O' The Line) components with the woofer in the stock location and the tweeters in the sail pannel. I also have RF coaxials in the rear locations. I keep those low passed because they do help out with mid bass more than one would think and all the sound seems to be coming from in front of me. Sounds great most of the time, but sometimes it sounds a little muddy just becuase the way the speakers are all acting on eachother and the fact that the stock locations are just bad mounting locations. Remember, more speakers doesn't necessarily make it sound better. In a regular cab I would just use good quality (Rockford Fosgate, Infinity, Kicker) components fronts and look for a way to mount at least an 8" or a 10" sub behind one of the seats. You will get awesome sound with a setup as simple as that.

If I was to put an 8" sub built into a center console, what type of amp would you recommend to cover all the bases? I would imagine that tweeters do not need to be amped. You know how guys put their tweeters at the top of the window pillars? What about putting them right above the seats, in the headliner? Or, would that be pointless and stupid? Thanks....

1.) I installed (helped install) a system in an RX-7 where we put the tweeters at the top of the A pillars. Nice convenient location, but the problem is that the highs from the tweets and the lows from the mid range speaker under the dash (in the DAK's case, the door)get too separated, and it sounds very high / "tinny". You dont' hear much of the mid-bass. It sounds like something that only a sound person would be picky about, but if you heard it, you probably wouldn't like it. In the headliner above the seat would be too high, wouldn't sound good at all.

My Tweeter Install..works nicely

2.) I would highly suggest to use a component set with a tweeter, woofer, and crossover. Don't just add on a tweeter. A component set will only sound its best if amped and not run off the head unit. You'd be surprised how much the amps in even the best head units lack; you will distort at even moderate volume settings.

3.) Putting an sub in the center console is much easier said than done. It will not work well unless you seal it very very well. If you did put a sub in there, power it off an amp with power rating equal to or less than the sub; you won't need much power to get good bass out of an 8". If you did the component fronts and the sub in the console, get a decent little 4 channel amp. Run the component speakers on two channels and bridge the sub across the other two channels. Most 4 channel amps have a Low-pass filter that allows you to do this easily. A 50W x 4 amp will be more than enough. I'm only running like 40W into each of component sets yet they can get way too loud to be comfortable.

Hope this all helps out somewhat....

I right now am running 2 punch he2 12's being pushed by a 500 watt 2 channel amp, that's putting out about 547 watts to each sub. I have a aftermarket HU but stock door speakers. On the head unit You can control the bass from -8 to -8. My question is, what can I do to turn the base on the head unit up to +5 or so. There is a lot of bass left in the subs and i have experimneted with the HU and heard it. Is there baseless speakers I can buy? Or a friendtold me about bass decreasers that I can buy and splice into the door speakers. Thanks.

Chris,
Are you asking if there is a way to Boost the bass to the subs without pushing the factory speakers anymore??? If so, yes there is a way. Bass Blocker Caps available online or at any place that sells/installs car audio will sell them. You splice them right inline with the factory speakers. I used them in my old car to cut down on bass to the 3.5" fronts. They do cut down on bass, but will not eliminate distortion if you still turn it up too loud; nothing will stop distortion if you do that. If you wanna cut as much bass as possible, use the caps that have the highest cutoff frequency you can get (I think I used 300Hz or 500Hz caps for the factory speakers. The higher the number, the more bass is blocked.

If you're asking about adjusting the bass on the head unit, somewhere on there there's a way to boost and cut bass. What kind of head you got???

I got the new RF head unit. I went with a complete RF set up and I must say for the price of everything it hits pretty damn good. I plan to install one more 12 and then call it done. Yea I had heard of the bass blockers before but I didn't see how they could work. I am not having any distortion at all, I just know there is a lot more boom left in the subs, but i Can't get more boom out of them without the door speakers beginning to distort and they will blow pretty quick since their paper coned. I guess all i can do is try, if it don't work I can keep my recepit!
