Does anyone know where the stock infinity amp is located in a '02 Durango? I have heard that it should be bypassed when installing a aftermarket head unit.. is this true? or would it be ok to just install the new deck with a wiring harness purchased from the local audio shop?? I just dont want to lose power, because my new cd/mp3 player puts out more power than the stock infinity amp does. So if there is someone out there that knows if it's ok to just run through the stock wiring via. a aftermarket harness, or does it, and should it be bypassed.... thanks P.V. fellow R/T durango owner

Unless your headunit is crap, you should bypass the amp, which is behind the passenger kick panel. If you are comfortable with wiring soldering, you could save a few bucks by bypassing the amp yourself. You can get the audio wiring diagram from any dealer for free.

Another Opinion,,
"98 Dak CC w/ infinity.. its located behind the passenger kick panel.. (4) 6.75" chry/infinity spkrs in the door + cab rear panel, with some tweets mounted in the door panels.
Replacing all the fac speakers, and plan to wire around the internal factory amp..
I have not seen, or found, any specs on the Infinity system, but,
Facts: I know for sure it is connected to the speaker outputs of the HU, and uses the remote/ant blue wire in the aftermarket adapter harness to turn it on. After replacing the factory HU, wired the adapter harness and decided I did not need the blue "remote/ant" wired in because I don't have a remote electric antenna, but needed the remote out to turn on my Sub's Amp, which runs off the pre-outs of the new HU. I went straight to the the sub-amp... when testing I soon discovered the internal factory speakers wern't working. After double checking the wiring the only thing I could have missed was that blue wire, so I connected it into the adapter harness and now the door/rear (rf/lf/rr/lr) speakers worked, disconnected it and no sound. Doing some research I found that the speaker wires, (rf/lf/rr/lr), run into an external amp mounted behind the passneger kick panel between the HU and the fac. speakers, the speakers have internal crossovers incorporated into each speaker.
Now for my opinion: The above, new HU into the factory amp, works but is not optimum. The internal amp, part of the "Premium Infinity" system, is rated for a minimum and maximum input sensitivity and when overdirven the result is not as designed. The Factory HU puts out xxx on the speaker wires, rf/lf/rr/lr, and when the volume level is adjusted upwards the level is raised on the speaker wires, which is fed into this external amp. which then further amplifies the signal. The input levels are somewhat matched to the factory HU output specs. When I changed out the HU with a replacement that has its own internal amplification, which is considerably greater than the factory "Premium Infinity" sound system, it can possibly overdirve the factory external amp, and the sound it produces is less than desireable.
What I find with the setup now, replaced HU with a 4*45w, plus pre-outs driving subs.. is that the volume and eq controls are very tempromental when trying to adjust the internal speaker tone or volume, and the door speakers become distorted much quicker.

I firgured as much, and was very concerned about the distortion, and not getting the power from my new HU, I was just wanting to make sure...
Do you or any one else know if a company like METRA or someone else makes a by-pass plug, or harness? like the one's for the dash????
I can soder, but I'd rather not do that unless I have to...

Just wanted to see if I could get some clarification. I have a '02 Quad w/ the Infinity system. I changes the front and rear door speakers and since then I can not crank the bass up. It distorts. Now, I lef the amp attached and the factory tweeters installed. I really don't want to spend anymore money on the system but I woul dlike some bass without the distortion. Should I disconnect the tweeters since I got 3 ways in the door? Is it bc I do not have an impedance match between the door speaker and tweeter anymore? Any info would be welcomed.

If you have new speakers with tweets, DO NOT use the old tweets.....highs too loud and factory's suck. About distortion...the new speaks you have are designed to handle more power than the OEM, and probibly have a lower sensitivity (dB). To get the same volume as the old, you will need to turn up the radio with the new ones. Since the factory amp sucks it clips and sends a distorted signal to your speaks....which will harm them. You need more clean power. Start by undoing the old tweets and see if that helps, then look into a new radio

OK, I did replaced my HU but with the OEM 4 CD in-dash changer. I think it throws a little more but not much. THe new speakers are 3 way Pioneer's the only 6 3/4 speakers that fit without trouble. I used to be able to put the bass and volume up rather high with the stock infinity speaker, but now I HAVE to leave bass at the mid point or I get distortion.
Another option I had thought about was getting component speakers for the front but then I think I'll need a new amp and have to use the crossovers and I'm really don't want to do all that. Cost plus unsurity on how that all need hooked up.
I will disconnect the tweeter and try that. Right now the tweeters sound fine, it's just the bass distortion. Could it be just the vibrations, and if that's it what could I do?

I have components and they are great. They come with crossovers and are very easy to install. You would need a new amp to make them worth it though. The amp would need high level inputs too. When the sound distorts how loud is the volume? If you can only turn it up a little more before it stops getting louder it is because of the factory radio/amp. If it is at very low volume, something else is wrong. I found that my factory radio had a lot of bass without turning it up. If you listen at loud volumes, turn the bass to zero (middle) or lower. Even a small amp 50W rms would help out your new speakers, it's all about how much you are willing to spend.

Hey Tool 6996,
I don't mean to anger you, but you have posted your questions under the same title that I started. Now everytime some one tries to help you I get notified that someone has responded to my original question, wich has nothing to do with what you asked......
I will give you my advice, by-pass the factory amp, and just run w/ your deck's power @ 45X4, and I promise you that you'll get much better sound,(unless you purchased a cheap deck) I also bet that you'll be able to leave the factory tweets hooked up with no problem..... For more bass, run some RCA's and hook up an amp and a sub.. or even simpler hook up a powered sub....
I know you said you don't want to invest any more $$$, but you don't have to spend a ton. you can get a fairly powerful 2 ch. amp for around $100, and if you can make the box yourself, then a sub will only run you $50-$100.. piece of cake....

that is why I'm trying to find out all this info, so that I can use the factoring wiring only, and bypass that p.o.s. factory amp. I know the color code for the output of the amp, but the input is different than what I had expected, but I'll get it. Did you by-pass yours?

Paul, I sure did! I have an alpine 7894 MP3 HU hooked to a Blaupunkt PA4100 class-T 4x100 rms amp. The front channels drive my Focal Polykevlar 6.5" components and the two rear channels each drive a Vifa 8" sub. These subs were put into a custom built enclosure which is in place of the rear compartment in my Durango.

So Mr. SilverD,
I take it that you pretty much re-ran all wires and cables.. did a complete install....or overhaul, as it could be put....
I must say that you have pretty expensive tastes in speaks.. I'll bet it sounds great, what is it in? I know the D stands for something Dodge.
See I'm not going to go all out this time.. I did that last time, and everytime my wife see's me around the durango with that look in my eye's she starts to get furious... not that I did anything wrong or hurt anything, it was the whole $$$$$ thing... she's mad at me know as we speak for buying a Kenwood KDC-X959 deck, and the Sirius sat. reciever and antanna.. I still have my soundstream refrence 500s, and 2 SPL 12's, but I think I'm only going to use 1 w/ the ref.500s, and just stick with deck power to the others, thus the reason for my wanting to by-pass the factory (crap) amp.. I haven't really decided what to put inplace of the stock speaks yet?? really haven't been able to look, my wife is alway's breathin' over my shoulder.... if you know what I mean....

I'll bet that it sould terrific. I've delt with both brands, I had vifa tweets along time ago, and I have done a few installs with focal, I must say I was impressed with both of them, so I can only imagine how it sounds.. did you mount the sub in the rear utility compartment?
Hey you wouldn't be silverd because you durango is silver would you, cause if so guess what? so is mine.... I sure do like it. But it being the R/T I wish that it had a bit more GRRrr. but it does ok....but it get horrible MPG>>>>YUCK!
anyway back to the stereo talk, I had cocidered running components, is there enough room on th back side of the door panels to mount the X-overs? just wondering... because that is the way I have alway's gone,,components... they just give you a much more dynamic range and really spread out the sound.... not to mention they are a heck of alot crisper....

Yep, the sub box replaces the rear compartment, but doesn't take up more space. I'll email you the pic. I have a 2000 4.7 platinum metalic durango...thus silverD. I like the color because it goes well with my street secenes grill and would look cool with the 20" R/T rims. Due to door slamming and moisture, I felt the doors would be bad place to mount the xovers. I mounted each behind the seperate kick panels and fed two sets of wires into the doors. I'll see if your email is listed, if not would you post yours?

I installed my xovers inside the doors. There is plenty of room behind the panel up near the handle. If you're worried about moisture, first coat the door with Dynamat or something like it, then mount the xover over that under the panel. You should be good to go. Just as long as you don't leave the xover laying on the bottom of the door.
