Subject: Question about adding a subwoofer
IP: Logged

Message:
I got a 1999 Yellow Dakota Regular Cab. I just had a Kenwood 50W x 4 internal amp cd player, Alpine component speakers and a 90W x 2 Alpine amp all installed at a local car audio place. After listening to it, I still want more bass in my truck. What kind of subwoofer can i get that will fit behind my seat? Will the 90W x 2 amp be powerful enough to run a sub, or will i need another one? Cause right now the amp is running power to my component speakers. I'm kinda pissed cause I've already spent around $400 and I want more bass. Just wondered if anybody has any suggestions and I don't want to spend too much more money. Thanks

You will probably be satisfied with running a sub off the amp you have. If it is bridgable, you will have around 180 watts at 4 ohms.

Depending on the room, you can choose your sub. Make sure it is fairly efficient. If you have a large amount of room, I would go with a 12" or even a low-power 15". I have found that when power is limited, try to use the biggest size possible for the most bass.

A vented enclosure will be great in your application.

I don't know if my amp is bridgable, how can I find that out? I don't know too much about car audio stuff and I really don't wanna spend money on another amp. If I could use the 90Wx2 amp I have now to power a sub, that would mean I couldn't run the amp to my component speakers anymore right? So then could the 40watt RMS component speakers run off my Kenwood cd player? Also could I buy a subwoofer and sub box from Best Buy or Curcuit City that would fit behind my passenger seat? There's not much room in my Regular Cab. I don't wanna spend much more money, but I really want a sub in my Dakota. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreicate it.

I HAVE BUILT A BOX THAT REPLACES THE CENTER SECTIOM OF YOUR SEAT THAT HOUSES A JL AUDIO 10W3 SUB. IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS GREAT. I THINK THIS WOULD SOUND ALRIGHT WITH THAT AMP IF IT CAN BE BRIDGED. THE KENWOOD RADIO SHOULD RUN THE OTHERS JUST FINE. IF INTERESTED EMAIL ME AT IBSRJOE@SBCGLOBAL.NET AND I CAN SEND YOU SOME PICS.

Sorry for the delay. Yes, if you use the amp to power your sub, you will have to power the components off your head unit. Actually, there is a way to run both, but your sub will have very little power to run it.

Let me know what your budget is to spend on the rest of your system. I will see what I can do to line you up with some good equipment. Do you mind buying off the Internet? How about Ebay? Do some searching around.

Before you buy anything, let me know.

Good luck

I have a rc R/T with bucket seats and behind them sit two unpowered 8" Bazooka Bass Tubes. I was very skeptical of only having 8's after having Orion 12's in my last truck. However, I have been and still am very pleased. These are the dual voice coil versions that can handle 400 watts each. Each tube fires toward the doors and they sound GOOOOD!

So it would be ok to run my components off the Kenwood head unit, that helps so I don't need another amp. I'm looking to spend at the most $200, cause I've already spent $400 on the stuff I already got. I guess I wouldn't mind getting something off the internet, I just haven't done that before and I wouldn't know how to install it. How much do those Bazooka Bass Tubes cost? I heard that Kicker has pretty good subs too, but it will have to fit behind my passenger seat, cause right now my amp is mounted behind the driver seat. Whatever anybody thinks would be best, let me know. Thanks

ScottieJ-
The Kicker unpowered 8" tubes are also awesome. Efficient, fairly cheap, and would probably give you exactly what you are looking for. One of my fiends has ONLY 1 in his S-10 regular cab and it is clear, tight, and I could not believe it was only one 8" until I saw it with my own eyes, it sounds like so much more. If the amp that you already have is bridgeable, it would be plenty of power to run just one. This would leave you running your components off your head unit which is not usually recommended but depending on what kind they are, it may be fine. The internet is a good source for car audio needs, just do a little research and use good judgement before buying to be sure the dealer you are buying from is fairly reputible. I have gotten alot of items online and have saved LOTS of money but keep in mind you dont get the personalized attention that you get from the local shop. Just something you might want to keep in mind.

I hope this info might be of some help to you. Thanks

Sorry about the delay, I think I'm gonna buy the Infinity BassLink. I went to Circuit City yesterday and one of the guys that works there has the BassLink in his Sunfire and I got to listen to it inside his car. I was really impressed with how much bass it puts out. Circuit City's price is too high, they wanted $350, so I found a place on the internet for $240. The place is called Sonic Electronix, just wondered if u have heard of it and if they are reputable. The guys at Circuit City said the BassLink would probably fit behind my passenger seat, but I'll have to move the seat up a lot. Dimensions: Height 13 3/8, Width 14 1/2, Depth 9 7/8 inches. I'll have to measure to see if it will fit. Just wondered if you thought the BassLink for $240 was a good deal. Any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks
