Subject: cd decks under $200 IP: Logged
Message: After paying my bills this month, I realized I will not be able to spend as much as I wanted to on a cd reciever. Also Christmas is coming up. I just want to replace the head unit and leave everything else stock. There are too many choices and I don't know what to get. Can anyone recommend one $200 or less? There are a lot out there and I don't know sh!t about what's good or not. Also, how do I know if my factory system has an amp? Where is it? I have a 2000 V6 with a tape deck. Thanks for any help.

Message: Look behind your passenger kick panel to see if you have an amp. If you don't have the infinity system then you probably don't have a factory amp.
Go shop around:
crutchfield.com, circuitcity.com, ebay.com, best buy
You will find something in your price range.
Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, Kenwood are good brands and have units below $200.

Message: I got a Pioneer DEH-P43 from Walmart. This thing really impressed me. It makes my stock speakers sound pretty good. For anyone wanting to upgrade there stock tape deck, this is a good cheap alternative. I paid $189 and you can get them cheaper online.

Message: Just a reminder, the Dakota is a 1.5DIN sized head unit. You can put a 1 DIN in there but there will be a pretty good gap that the installer will have to put a plastic ring around to cover it up. A lot of places just list the ones for our Dakotas under "GM/Chrysler" sized head units.

Message: Putting a 1 din unit in a 1 1/2 din opening is not a big deal at all, $20 for a small kit and your done.
The 1 1/2 din units are not updated as often and the selection is not very wide.
In the long run you will forget about the extra money and appreciate the better unit.

Message: R/Truck,
I agree with you that there are fewer options out there for the 1.5 din. I just wanted to make aaron aware of the proper size. There used to be a link I had that showed someone's dakota with a 1 din installed, but i have lost it. I did find a Jensen that works pretty well in a 1.5 din, but haven't bought one myself yet.

I know what you were saying, just giving some input into your post.
Here are some pics of a single din in a Dakota, along with Alpines demo truck.

I purchased a Kenwood and was not very happy with the controls. I returned it and bought an Alpine CDE 7859 for about $200 and am very happy with it.
with the wire adapters, I didn't need to splice any wires ! It took 15 minutes to install and the 1 DIN size looks fine...
