Subject: Sub enclosure volume? IP: Logged
Message: Well, I've decided to build my own sub enclosure. I've got a 02 QC and I want to put 1 10" behind the samller of the rear passenger seats so I don't have to move the jack and I can still flip up the larger seat. I've done a lot of measuring and have determined that I can build a box with 0.4 cu ft of volume. Is this enough for a 10" sub? Also, how much space do I need between the seat back and the sub?

Message: I dought you can get a box w/ 0.4 cu ft behind the small seat. I have a box behind the large back seat and its as big as it can get using 3/4" wood and its only about .47 cu ft and im running a 10" sub that is only 3" deep and it bearly fits. My amp is behind the small seat and my capacitor is under the small seat. There is no room for anything else. For most 10" subs .4 cu ft is not enough but you can really underpower it and it should be ok. I am currently planning a box that is one box that goes behind both seats and is a fiberglass back and wood for the rest of the box. This box will have one kicker L5 Solo Baric. Its gonna need a woofer grille and sum seat cutting. But i think it will be worth it. If you have any questions let me know..... BlackDak20@aol.com

Message: I built a box to fit behind the smaller back seat. I used 1/2" particle board. I figured since the box would be small, the thinness of the board would not be an issue. I think the volume ended up being close to .4 cf. I put a JL 10W6 into the box (depth 4.875 inches) and I think I had just enough that the back of the magnet was away from the back wall (It was also at an angle, so venting was not an issue). Anyway, I used a sealed box, and although the volume is smaller than recommended, it sounds pretty good. I have about 400RMS going to it. I am very happy with it.
One recommendation - make sure that the width of the box is small enough to fit between the mounting brackets under the seat. I didnt intentionally measure mine to fit, but it did, and putting the seat back in would have been nearly impossible if I couldnt put the box in first.
If I remember correctly, these are the approximates of the box:
3.5" top depth
---
|..\
|...\
|....\
|..../\
|.../..\15" tall
|../....\15" wide
|./......\
|.\____\
-----------
7.5" bottom depth

Message: Thanks for the help and suggestions. I was able to construct a box which gave me exactly 4 cu. ft. I tried to put an Audiobahn 10" AW1051Q but it was too deep (4 5/8") so I put an 8" Audiobahn AW831Q which has a mounting depth of 3 7/16.

Message: Thats a bummer the 10 didn't fit. My guess is if you play around with the dimensions just a little, you could squeeze it in there. It might not be worth rebuilding the box, though, if the 8 sounds good. There is no telling if the 10 would even sound any better considering the size of the box. I know I got lucky with mine.

Message: Yes, I too wondered if forcing a 10 in that small of a space would be a good idea. As it is now, the 8 should have lots of air space, so I'm happy with the idea so far. I have a JL BP150.1 amp to drive it, so I'm hopind that when I install everything after Christmas it'll sound great:)

Message: I am currently working on designing a box that will hold a Kicker L5 10". It will be one big box that goes across the entire rear of the cab (inside the seat brackets of coarse) but it will be behind both seats. The back of the box will be fiberglass contoured to the back wall of the cab and the rest of the box will be 3/4" mdf wood. I will have to put a woofer grill on it and maybe cut out parts of the seat where the sub is, but this should end up really good. So well will c. Right now im measuring and designing. So I havent yet began building. Cant wait till i get it done though.
