Subject: Does it matter which capacitor I buy?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm working on putting a sound system in my 98 dakota club cab. I'm going to be pulling about 750-1000 watts through my two amps, so I figure that I'll need to get a capacitor to prevent headlight dimming, etc. Someone suggested that I get a 1.0 farad capacitor.
Does it really matter what brand capacitor I get, what is the big difference in farad ratings? (I've noticed that some brands seem to have very inflated farad ratings) What advantage is there to a capacitor with a digital display?
Thanks for the help!

Just get a 1 farad capacitor and it should take care of your system. No need for a digitial display they are just an extra feature for show. You can get them new for less then $100 just about anywhere. There is a new type of capacitor that puts out 15-25 Farad that cost several hundred, they work great but unless your running an spl machine don't worry about it.

if you have the upgraded(136A) alternator, you shouldn't have much of a problem even w/o a cap......but otherwise, you want to,look at around 1F/1Kw...there is no *advantage* to the digital display other than knowing what your alt. is doing.....Richard Clark has nearly proven that too large of a capacitor can acutally make a system worse.....so unless you're running 50Kw+, using the giant Alumapro caps may actually hurt your system performance....

Yo, Sniper,

How do I know if I have the upgraded 136A alternator ?

Have a '98 Dak-SLT CC.., 5.2L, (purchased used), supposed to have towing package.. It has a serious hitch but who knows if it is factory or owner addon..

i would have to assume that if it's a 5.2 with the 'towing package' then it probably has the 'upgraded elctrical system' also......it shoudl be marked on the alt. somewhere...

You can verify by VIN all the options, but you will need to go to a dealer to do it. They can look up the history of that VIN all the way back to the plant in Auburn Hills, Mi. At least everything that was documented. Should be able to get you a list of the options it came with. The dealer has to know those things for when they need to order parts for vehicles.
