Subject: Custom Sub Box IP: Logged
Message: OK, I'm building a sub box for my friend's truck and it's complete with all the inside joints caulked and sealed. However, I was wondering what kind of seal you would put between the actual speaker and the hole it goes into. Should I run a bead of caulk around the outside of the speaker rim or just screw it in and not worry about it? I'm thinking the caulk would be messy on the speaker even though it'd only be on the outter metal edge. Any help would be great!

Message:
There should be a round foam piece that came with the sub(s). Either that or it could be something like four 1/4 circle foam pieces. Anyway, these foam pieces go between the sub(s) and the enclosures.

Message: Dude, Don't do the caulk on the sub deal. Yes that will seal it but it's messy, you could get the crap all over your sub, you'll have a harder time getting the sub out and it'll just plain look like crap with oozing puss all over the basket rim. Go with the foam ring that intense is talking about or go to the hardware store and get some thin weather stripping that isn't too stiff. Get the smallest width you can so you can form it around the underside of the basket. Get the self adhesive type. When you screw the sub down, make sure you don't warp the basket at all. Because the weather stripping is thicker than the normal foam ring you need to tighten the screws evenly and uniformly. Don't just crank down on one and go around in a circle like that. Go a little at a time until they are all tight.Warping the basket is not as hard as it sounds to do. An over zealous drill will bend the hell out of a speaker. Result...distorted surround and loss of effeciency, potential sound quality deterioration.

Message: You can buy weather stripping at a hardware store that looks like strings of clay. You just run a string around your sub or on the box. The stuff isn't messy and can be removed.
If you use caulk you may screw up your speaker.

Message: R/Truck is absolutely right. I may be talking out my ass but I'm pretty sure that if you get silicone caulking on foam surrounds they will melt.

Message: Certain caulks will also eat your subwoofers surround. So be careful what you use inside the box as well.
The safe bet is to let the box dry for a couple of days (I know it is hard to waite that long) to let the acidic vapors go away and the caulk time to dry.

Message: Problem solved. We didn't use anything. He carpeted the box and we just screwed down into the carpet and it seals nicely. Sounds good for being such a small enclosure, too.

Message: ports or dril holes? drilling hoeles will degrade the sound. until I stried sticking my xtant x-series into a 0.90 cu ft box I could not get the box to seal forever always had distortion. rain window weather stripping around the basket placed it back in the box all distortion was gone.
If you want a ported box, build a new one if you add ports especially the ones you buy out of say crutchield it tunes the box very high. but I guess thats your taste.

Message: Jonh, If you have a sealed box leave it alone, drilling hole(s) in the box won't do anything but ruin the box.
What your friend might be talking about is a ported box. This is a box with a vent (tube) which tunes the box to a specific frequency, say 30hz, and makes it louder. The only problem with building a ported box is that the interior air volume and port volume (tube diameter and length) have to be dead on to get the box to perform right. If a ported box is not built to the correct specs for the sub, it can and will make the sub sound terrible. Sealed boxes on the other hand can vary slightly without a noticable difference.
Brand XX sub can run in a sealed box from .75 to 1.5 cu ft, a lot of room for error. Same brand XX sub must run in a ported box 2 cu ft with a 4" x 11" long port, these specs must be met or the sub won't perform correctly.
Best way to put it is sealed boxes are easier to make, less efficient and smaller in size, while ported boxes are harder to make, more efficient and larger than sealed boxes.
I prefer sealed boxes because the boxes are smaller and the bass is "punchier". Plus I don't have to worry about covering the vent with all the stuff throwh into the back seat of my truck.
