Message: If there's one thing I want to do in the coming months, it's replacing my 2000 Dakota Club factory sound system--one of the worst I have ever heard.
With that in mind, what are all of your favorite sound system brand names for cassette receivers and speakers?
Thanks for your comments,
David

Message: For Speakers and tape player, go with Sony explode. My system really surprised me with the power levels from just the Cd deck itself. Then I added the 12 in Sub woofers and the 450x2 Watt amp. It really kills. Go with the sony explode, very nice quality. Also buy from www.crutchfield.com They have good prices and give you everything needed to install the components yourself. Good Luck, tell us what yo decide. Thanks Joe E.

Message: David,
If you have a decent home stereo (RCA outs from the cassette deck) and a burner (any burner will do) you could record your tapes to CD, get a quality CD player and have way better sound than any tape deck...
if not I would personally recommend Pioneer

Message: Well I have the basic custom sound system..
I went with the Aiwa mp-3 player. It was the only thing out besides Kenwood. I don't like kenwood. But it pushes 22 rms. and never skips. So far very suprised at the Aiwa.
I put in pioneer speaker. VERY clear and crisp. And LOUD. I wish I could afford a amp. Plus the 6 1/2 has a over sized ring so not extra mounting. You can find them on ebay cheep.

3 way front and 2 way rear.
I also went with the amped loaded thunderform. Sounds great.

Message: I recommend Alpine. From what i understnad they are the best. I have an alpine myself. Its a CD Receiver though, not a deck.
As for components, JL Audio makes a Stealth box that fits under the clubs rear seat. Fits one 8.
My Alpine stereo pushed 60watts RMS. Its high power with 3 RCA outs, and a Sub out.
Did they change the speakers from the years 2000 to 20001? I have infinities in mine, and they sounds really good. As for the head, CD sounded fine, and i never used the tape part of it.
But if you have a CDR, i agree with "umStefa". Definatly make those tapes into CD's. You know tapes degrade right? So the longer you wait, the worse they will sound. CDS last what. 100years they say?
my 2 cents.

Message: Excuse my stupidity, but can you use a tape and write to a CDR drive? Are you talking about a computer CDR or one of those single componet CDR?
I have a friend that has a tape deck and tons of tapes and wants to upgrade to CDs but he thought he would have to buy all new albums again and ditch the tapes. But if he could have CD s written off those tapes, it would be great. What ever you guys say, thats what Ill tell him. It cool though!
Thanks, Joe E.

Message: Joe >
Typically all sound cards have Phono Plug (the small deadphone jack) inputs. What you do is you take your walkman, tape player or whaterver, and buy an adapter.
Depending on what you have you need diff things. If you have a rack system tape player, you will need RCA plugs (Red and white big ones) to a mini phono plug.
You plug that into your input on the sound card and basically record it using any method you like. There are prob lots of dl's for that stuff, even stuff to take out the hiss.
If you have a walkman, you will need a male to male mini phono plug connector (any radio shack has em).
Plug it in to the sytem.
You record the files as Wav files, then burn them to a cd. I WARN YOU! do not every nuke the wav files. Keep em. Or compress them to a high qual mp3. if your tapes/cds die, these will last a long time!
Does that make sense?
Ill give more detail if you want. SOrry if i made it too simple :)

Message: Just my two cents...Don't buy anything from Crutchfield!!! They have great customer service, but they also charge the MSRP on almost everything they sell. There are plenty of online retailers as well as neighborhood audio shops that sell for much less. Try sounddomain.com for starters.
Popular opinion rates headunit brand names as follows: Alpine, Nakamichi, Pioneer, Clarion, Sony, Kenwood. But your ears will tell you what sounds best.
Don't get caught up too much in the brand names either because almost all manufacturers have different levels in performance. Sony for example has Mobile ES as their top line, followed by Explod and then just plain old Sony.
The best advice I can give is to burn all of those tapes to CD, like the guys suggested. Then go and by the best headunit you can afford. Don't forget to take into account, the ability of your headunit to grow with the rest of your system. Look for more than one set of preouts, maybe a crossover or sub preout built in, even an EQ.
After you finally pick your receiver you're going to need some speakers. If you can afford component sets, go for it. If not, a good pair of coaxials will do just fine. Again, listen to them before you buy. Only you can be the judge of what you like.
If you know the amount of loot you're going to drop, post it here. I'll try and give you some suggestions on equipment to fit your needs. I've been in the car audio world in one way or another for 12 years now.
Good Luck!!!

Message: Dave, I get what your saying. I never thought to use those jacks on the sound card. I dont have a CDR drive on my computer but I am hoping to get one real soon. Thanks for the help man.
Spaghets, you are right about the brand thing. Its all about what you want personally. I run a sony moblie ES head unit and love it. But I also have MTX, pioneer, and infinity components. Looking to upgred the pioneers though. I have ordered a few things from crutchfield and have been satisified. I always buy the components on sale though. Never straight price. Those components were pretty standard with all the other places I checked, except local shops. There are none in the near area. I live in South Fla in the middle of the state. In the woods! well, you gentlemen have a good evening!
Thanks for the help. Joe E.

Message: One other thing..
You may already know this, but make sure you record it to your hard drive at a high level (44,000Khz, 16bit stereo) CD Quality.
You always want to get the highest quality you can start with. Dont want to waste your time making bad tape to cd conversions.
There is a Sound recorded in windows that will work, however i think there is a time limit to how much you can record. Let me know if your friend gets it all worked out!

Message: Thanks for all your suggestion...some comments on your comments:
I would love to burn all my tapes to CD, but unfortunately, I lack one very important thing: A home stereo :-) So I don't have the equipment to pull that off.
As for what I would like to spend, let's say around $500. I'm an old guy who doesn't need subwoofers or component speakers. Just need a decent indash and decent spekers. I am a fan of Alpine, so am inclined to go with them.
Regards,
David

Message: Heres what to do:
Buy a Pioneer 9300 CD player. Then Buy A Diamond Audio Component System. Then for subs you are going to run two Diamond Audio Mac Daddy 10's. The 10's are going to be running off of a US AMP.
Or option two:
Pioneer 9300 CD player. Kove Audio Component System. And two Kove Armaggedon U-2 12 inch Subs each powered by US AMP's.
Anything else, is just less civalized.

Message: My two cents...
Clarion CD Head unit and CD changer - sweet, control the EQ unit from the radio.
Clarion EQ/DSP/Crossover - digital control w/out sticking another 1/2 unit in the dash
HiFonics Amp - best bang for the buck, rated power and then some
Infinity Mids and Highs - so smooth sounding, give a listen
Kicker Subs - they go low & deep plus fit into TINY spaces
Tapes... what are tapes? ;)

Message: I would stick with alpine, pioneer, or an older sony mobile es unit. STAY AWAY FROM XPLOD. Do you really want something called xplod? Think about it... Also don't buy from crutchfield they charge full price. Look through and find something you like and then shop around for it. I would like others really encourage you to get a cd player, a tape deck sounds like crap after listening to a cd. Get some decent mids and run them off a small amp. Whoever said 60 watts rms is dreaming. Maybe for all 4 channels combined. Most head units are between 12-18 watts rms. Some of the newer ones do 20-24 but an amp is just cleaner and clearer.
