 Subject: 8" subs in side club cab panel?

Anyone ever seen or thought of dynamatting the crap out of the hollow space in the side wall of a CC and throwing in a pair of 8's in them? I did when I first got the truck nut wanted a little bigger bass. When you got the side panels off it look like you could get at least .75' cubic feet of air space in there. You could pains takingly seal off all the holes in the structure making an enclosure of the cavity or just free-air it. It would be a really stealth install. Can you tell I got nothing better to do then daydream all day and post messages to this board? Cool talking to you guys!

Your not the only one!
I am seriously considering mounting some amps and a cd changer in those areas. My only problem is getting to the items once they are installed. I hate to modify the outer trim, cause it would cost a fortune to fix it later.

I bet those side panels are $200+ each.
You could remove the materieal part and fabricate a custom grill. That would look great and keep the speakers out of sight.

Its easier than you think. I used to install something similar to what you're discussing in SUVs.
I could put a 8 or 10 inch sub in the back cargo area of an SUV by sealing off the area directly behind the rear wheel well, dynamatting the piss out of it and then modifying the interior panel so that I could place a .75 inch MDF baffle on it to mount the speaker.
It's a lot of work to make sure the cavity is airtight, but nothing will compare to the stealthiness of the install. Plus the fact that you dont lose any interior space.
The first thing I would do is to check the feasibility of sealing the cavity off so it's airtight. If you can accomplish that, the hard part is done.
You could probably find a panel at a late model junkyard to test-fit your install.

You probably could get away with putting an 8 in the existing speaker hole. Maybe cut a little metal and but a 3/4" spacer ring in along with sealing off the cavity.
Another thought is some installers use the expanding foam then hollow out the area for the sub.
Lets give it a shot.

Any follow ups on this? I'm thinking of doing it cause I need my tool tray and my back seat more than I need bass.
I have the factory Infinity system and a Club Cab, and I'm not happy with the bass performance. I also feel the factory speakers would do much better if the bass was diverted elsewhere.

I have thought about it as well,I had to make spacer rings to enable my 5 1/4's to fit in the factory hole,the difficulty here is you cannot come out very far off the metal,before you will hit the inner side of the interior panel,I'm sure you could modify it though,just take into consideration the movement of the driver itself,and make sure it will not touch the panel at all.You might want to consider a 6 1/2 inch subwoofer,maybe image dynamics,diamond audio,something that will fit in the existing hole,and designed to play lower frequencies.Sealing the compartment is going to be key,good luck.

Hey, i do have 8s in my side wall. I bought the truck used so i didn't see them go in but i have pulled the panel off a number of times and it seems that they used particalboard or somthing of the sort and made a sealed box. I'm not sure what the volume is on them but i'm going to check later today cause i want to put a better 8 in there. I will take some pics if anyone wants them and if there are any questions feel free to ask. I should know more by the end of the day cause i'm going to look at them right now.

You can easily mount 8" subs in the doors and have less worries about mounting depth. you have about 5" behind the metal and additional 3" inches between the metal and the door panel(I added a 1" mounting ring to mine. By a sheet of 3/8" closed cell foam and spray glue it to the metal behind the vapour barier (the whole door). You also don't need to worry about cutting any holes in the plastic door panel (I did however mount tweeters in the stock location w/no name OEM looking grilles), only the metal in the door. Save that rear extra cab space for regular speakers and hiding your amps behind the metal. Oh, and the subs sound awsome - no rattles yet! (2000 extracab)

I'm about to install a pair of JL Audio 8IB4s in my CC. I put a Stealthbox in it a couple of weeks ago, but I don't like the way it kicks up the rear seat. I'm gonna try the 8's in the stock rear locations and hopefully lose the Stealthbox.
BTW, got the 8IB4 idea from the Forum at carsound.com There is a shop that says they have done a few of them with excellent results. Should know myself by the weekend.
