I have heard the same thing. I guess it is kinda like breaking in a new baseball glove. Maybe the surround and the "spider" below the cone need time to unstiffen from the factory. I can't imagine this would take very long since the thing should be vibrating 45+ times every second.

It's very true!! you will hear a sound diff. when they start stretching out, what i did that helped speed up the process was start my car and leave the heater on for 15-20 min at full blast, then play a bass cd. you can feel the difference in the polyurathane it gets alot softer.

you can lock up the sub if you bump hard before it is broken in. i am not sure what the term for that is though.

It's called "freezing" the cone. This is done by melting the voice coil. All the part need to heat up and be flexible a little at a time. It's kind of like taking a brand new motor and just redlining in for a while instead of letting it run and driving it slow first.

They will loosen up in about 2 weeks of "normal" playing - like a new pair of shoes :) You only need to break them in if your entering a competition and need to perform at max specs like the day after you installed them. I doubt you'll hear ANY difference unless your using a highly tunned band-pass box.

not entirely true. the Fs of a sub can drop by as many as 5 hz as it is broken in, which can affect the sound quite a bit.

the easiest thing to do is run some test tones through it. start with 50 hz for 5 minutes and the subs barely moving, then go to 60 hz for 5 minutes, etc., up to 100 hz. then drop down to 40 hz as the first cycle and go back up. then drop down to 30 and go back up. then let the sub cool down for about 30 minutes and start over, turning the gain up just a little more each time. you can break in your subs in just a days time.

Like I said - "I doubt you'll hear ANY difference unless your using a highly tunned band-pass box."
No way your hearing a 5Hz difference of the F3 downpoint of a given sub (or enclosure) unless your so experience in this type of stuff you already know how to break subs in properly and have the right equipment to do so.

Not trying to be a smartazz, just 'da facts.

Not to argue, but just to clarify my point, I just messed with winISD about that point. for my first example I used a JL Audio 12W3 in a sealed box. If i changed the Fs by 5 hz, i gained or lost 2-3 db in the same enclosure over the entire sub's useful output.

In a ported box the results were much the same, except the response curve was affected (changed) more than in the sealed box, where the most notable difference was just in SPL and the change was pretty uniform over the frequency response.
