Subject: Oil change type & frequency question... IP: Logged
Message: I was reading a very interesting artical about oil at http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/entrypoint.html?menu.html&engineoil_bible.html . The author brought up a few points about What I should be doing at my next oil change, and I was wondering what you thought of them?
1 - Being that my truck has 75,000 miles on it & it has only seen Quaker State 5w-30 in it, I would be best served by keeping with this oil because of the tolerance this oil had built up in the engine & also the fact that a synthetic may cause leaks.
2 - It basicly said that there wasn't enough info on the "higher milage" oils to make any sort of claim on them. Basicly if you don't have any small leaks, theres no point in switching to them.
3 - This question has me a bit concerned...It pretty much ruled against using flushing oils, because with an older engine, this may break away some small debris or build up on seals & either cause leaks or ruin the engine. The question I have is isn't this what Auto RX & SeaFoam is? I know that Auto RX is highly touted & I would like to use it, but I am a bit hesitant now.
4 - As far as oil change frequancy, he said one of the smallest factors should be mileage. He went on to say that for a normal vehical, changing the oil 3 times a year should be sufficiant based on the weather because of cold starts.
5 - It mentioned something on magnitized oil traps that fit on the outside of the oil filter. Does anyone have any experiance with these?

Message: when I change my oil (which is damn near never) I get whatever is on sale. I change my oil about every 60,000 miles wether it needs it or not. I have a 5.2 '98 dak w/ 160,000. Engine runs great. Trans is a piece of sh!t though IMHO.
