Subject: Tick when engine strains? IP: Logged
Message: My 1995 Dakota with the 5.2L makes like a ticking noise when the engine and transmission are strained. For example, when I really get on it or going up a steep hill. When it does tick it only does it every couple seconds so this leaves me to believe it's not the engine. Any ideas?

Message: Is it a steady rythmic/rapid tick? Or does it sound more like marbles in a coffe can?

Message: It will only tick a couple of times. Say I give it a lot of gas when going up a hill and it doesn't downshift, it will tick once then maybe again but it will do it until I ease off of it. So I wouldn't say it's rapid or rhythmic but I don't know.

Message: More than likly it could possible be the exhaust manifolds leaking. When the engine strains it twists and it allows exhast escape cause a ticking or slaping noise.

Message: Sounds like preignition (aka spark knock) to me. Usually the computer will catch it and adjust the spark timing to compensate, that's what the 'knock sensor' is for. You should only hear a few ticks and then the computer will respond. Basically, your engine is performing at its maximum capability, kind of 'toeing the line,' and when it crosses the line, it's smart enough to back off just a tad. You might try a tank of premium gas ...if the problem disappears or is noticeably lessened then you have your culprit. If you drive with a heavy foot or do a lot of towing or climbing hills you probably should be using a higher octane fuel. Spark plugs of a different heat range may also be required if the problem is chronic. You also might want to have your baseline spark timing checked if your engine has a distributor (my 2k 4.7 doesn't.) Many owners' manuals state that this is normal operation ...an occasional tick or two under heavy load.

Message: I do run premium because I have the Mopar Performance computer. I also have MSD 6 ignition amp. with autolites gapped to .055. Maybe that's too big a gap. I don't know.

Message: Standard gap is .040 (I think), It wouldn't hurt to try.

Message: I'm pretty sure the 5.2 liter doesn't have a knock sensor.
My 99 5.2 was making that noise A LOT when I first got it last October with 70k miles on it.
I changed out the spark plugs with Champion Truck Plugs(4071) and then replaced the Rotor and distributor cap and then the spark plug wires with the Mopar Performance wires.
There is also a Technical Service Bulletin for the spark plug wire routing. Apparently, the way the wires are routed from the factory, they arc across the engine and the other plug wires causing the pinging noise you are hearing.
I still run 87 octane in mine and it very very rarely ever makes that pinging noise anymore.
There is also the belly pan gasket, when it goes, I've heard it can cause pinging as well. The only easy way to tell if it is gone is to look down the throttle body with a flashlight to see if there is oil sitting on the bottom of the intake manifold, if there is a fresh coating of liquid oil down there, then it is a good sign the gasket is blown. You'd also likely be burning oil too.
I would recommend that you change out the plugs, wires (using the Technical Service Bulletin), cap and rotor first if it has been a long time since it was done on your truck.
Good luck!

Message: Here are those Technical Service Bulletins I was talking about...
TSB for spark knock due to misrouting of spark plug wires...
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/09-05-00.htm
TSB for belly pan gasket leaking...
http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/09-05-00.htm
They are for the RAM but it is the same engine.
