Subject: 2002 Dakota Quad Cab V8 4x4Trans. Issues IP: Logged
Message: Just wanting to check if anyone has had any issues with the 2002 year transmissions. for the past 40k miles mine has kind of shifted hard but I have never been on any long trips with it until the past 2 years. I just drove 300 miles today and the transmission is acting up again. It starts shifting hard and then I can kind of feel it jerk occasionally while on the highway. I stopped at a redlight about a mile from my house and it didnt even want to go, like it was stuck in 3rd gear or something. It has done this before after another long trip but after I let it sit for about an hour it goes back to shifting normally. Anyway, anyone have any experience with something like this or with this year model truck?

Message: wat engine is it? if thats a 46re, ur best bet is to change the fluid and filter because on that tranny it should be changed every 20-30k miles to avoid breakdown. if that dont fix it it could be ur gov. pressure solenoid or sensor acting up.

Message: Which engine do you have? That determines which trans you have and where the problems may be. 46RE or 45RFE.

Message: If a filter and fluid change is required in your tranny, I have found from hard experience that it is best to do 2 things.
1. Have the tranny flushed, not just drained.
2. Refill with ONLY Mopar filter and MOPAR fluid, regardless of what anyone else says. No other brand of fluid and absolutely no additives.

Message: Valvoline makes a very good ATF+4 fluid I just put in my 45rfe and it's now running better than ever. As long as it's ATF+4 you should be OK. No need to pay 11$/quart for Mopar fluid when you get something that meets the same standards for less than half now.

Message: ATF+4 is a Daimler/Chrysler Copyright and Patent - Valvoline makes an "equivalent"...but it's not ATF+4.
BTW: ATF+4 is $20/Gallon.

Message: Oops...hit the post button too quick.
The ATF+4 from Valvoline also has the (R) trademark symbol on it - that's licensed from DC. However, they claim "replaces ATF+3" - that's incorrect. Some vehicles in the DC line can not use the ATF+4 (year/model depending).

Message: Valvoline is a substitute. DC refused to give out the ATF+4 forumula for awhile then the other atf makers filed suit and changed that. And ATF +4 us 11 per gallon through my dealer in PA I dont know who you buy through.

Message: Take it to the dealership and let them fix it; you have a 100k/10 year powertrain warranty. I had my tranny rebuilt once and replaced once before 80k miles. $100 deductible at the dealership.

Message: you now can get "MOPAR ATF+4" at wal-mart for almost half the price as the dealer. ONLY use MOPAR fluid.
I also have an 02quad with 4.7L, no tranny or engine problems. 48,000 miles.

Message: You might have two problems the buck at speed is probably
the front drive shaft rear CV joint. Chrysler wont sell jest the
joint and want $500 for a complete shaft. But the front shaft
rear joint for a 99 Grand Cherokee is identical except for
dimension that a machine shop can match to the old one for
about $25 and the new joint for $130 no welding necessary.
Remove the shaft to check the joint.

Message: Not sure if my case would be the same as yours but my 02
Dakota 4.7 just came out of the shop. I was having similar
issues; when I would first start it up and go in reverse it would
hesitate like it wasn't going into gear then slowly grab. Also
when I would go uphill or tow anything it would shift late and
hard ( trans hemp light would come on every once in a while
too). Pulled the check engine codes and it said it was a sensor
but ended up being my torque converter. $1000 later and its
running fine- stupid shops ripped me off, wish I had the time to
do it myself!
