Subject: Transmission Cooler Help IP: Logged
Message: 2003 Dakota SXT V6 2wd RC
Need some help / advice here folks.
I started the process to install my aftermarket tranny cooler last night. I undid the fitting for the return line off the radiator to install the barb fitting that came in the install kit "for dodge/jeep" (permacool brand IIRC).
Well the fitting on the truck is anything but a typical line fitting. Instead it uses the threaded collar to compress an oring. Anyway the point is the install kit fittings I had will not work and I don't know where to get fittings like that with barbs on the other end. Finally even if I did there isn't enough room to move the hard line to allow me to put there fittings and the hoses on.
So here is my question (sorry, I'm long winded, ask the R6 Messagenet guys [grin]) : Is there any reason I should NOT cut the rubber portion of the return hose that is down near the bottom of the radiator and splice into that for my tranny cooler?
Also how does the factory tranny cooler (the add-on not the one in the radiator) connect up? Any sources for those hoses/pipes that isn't an arm and a leg?

Message: Your local NAPA store has hoses and fittings. Try there and see if you can get something that works.

PS: to bad the kit doesn't have the correct stuff.

Message: Well I'll still have the problem that there is not enough room around the fitting at the radiator to move the line aside, attach both fittings, and attach the hoses. Not without putting a big bend into the hose that might kink it.
But I'll see what NAPA has. Maybe (thinking some more about it now) if they have some 90 degree fittings it might have enough room [shrug].

Message: i put a cooler on mine. i cut the solid part to the hose. then i flared the end. then i got hose to fit it and ran that to the tranny cooler. just bypass the radiator part for the trans cooler. the cooler itself just gets plastic tied onto the front of the radiator. it should have come with the cooler. it works great.

Message: sorry i wasn't clear. just eliminate the lines that come from the radiator to the trans. you don't need them.

Message: I had thought about that. But a lot of searching and thinking made me concerned about a few things. Retaining the radiator cooler adds yet another level of cooling, as well it helps in overall warm-up of the coolant and the tranny fluid in cold temps (not an issue where I live now but will be when I move).
Also from a warranty POV I worry that it might be a fight as it is with an aftermarket cooler if I have tranny problems no less if I remove the OEM portion. I realize what that they have to prove it was the cause of the failure but given the history of these transmissions and the ease with which dealers will initially deny a claim requiring a fight ... I'm just trying to keep the scales tipped as far to my side as I can :(
But you are right it would be a lot easier. i hadn't thought of cutting and flaring the hard lines, because well ... I was just stuck on using barb fittings with the rubber lines. But I think I like the idea of tapping the hard line instead regardless if I remove or retain the stock radiator cooler. It will save my buying barb couplers though I will have to buy a tubing cutter.
So thanks for the idea. I'll still give some thought to eliminating the stock cooler but its gonna be hard to convince myself of it :)

Message: In warm weather climates it is safe to eliminate the radiator, but in colder climates it is best to keep it in the loop so the tranny fluid does at least get warm enough.

Message: does the tranny fluid really need to get warm? i thought the colder the better. the fluid doesn't get thick with the cold.

Message: Real cold fluid can build excessive pressure in the tranny which would be hard on parts and seals.

Message: On a '91 Dakota, where is there room to install an aftermarket cooler? The A/C takes up all the front of the radiator.

Message: Chuck......I just had my tranny rebuilt and my
father installed the aftermarket cooler on my
truck....there is plenty of room infront of the
radiator and behind the grill. We had to
position it on the right side or drivers side of
the radiator so the hoses would clear and
reach.....one bad part...I had to notch my air
dam to get it to fit right....but thos was his first
time to do this and i wasnt going to mess with
it...but Good Luck!
